My feet hurt after a 5k run and my left ankle is sore

A friend recently bemoaned to me “My feet hurt after a 5k run and my left ankle is sore”. Naturally I couldn’t be outdone and pointed out that my thighs, knees and calves hurt AS WELL as my feet.

Often it’s normal and nothing to worry about. If you are just starting out then remember to take it easy. Two good pieces of advice to beginner 5k runners are:

1. Mix your exercise up and never run on two consecutive days; and

2. Make sure you have the right shoes.

The more you run the more stress you potentially put on your body…joints, muscles, organs, the lot. So you should expect nagging aches and pains.

Longer standing issues should be discussed with an appropriate medical professional and a whole host of problems could exist. You could pronate, requiring orthopaedic insoles or other treatment, your technique could be ‘wrong’ requiring correction and the list goes on.

Luckily many aches and pains will go away as your body gets stronger from doing more and more exercise.

Enjoy 🙂
