Well, I probably am the 5k golfer. That’s 5000 shots for a round 🙂 Joking aside I’m probably not THAT bad and swinging the occasional club is great fun. But hard. Respect to all you very talented golfing types out there.
Even those of us perhaps less normally interested in golf will surely have noticed the impending (today) Ryder Cup. Europe vs USA ! perhaps one of the few sporting events that unite much of the populous behind the European banner.
Anyway, politics and my other pastimes aside, here is a press release of a new GPS golf watch from TomTom. I don’t profess to be any kind of expert on golf GPS watches, there are others out there for sure, but I know this sort of technology would have helped me on an ‘alien’ course years ago in the pre-GPS era.
For a couple of hundred quid you basically get a caddy on your wrist…not bad for the thousands of amateurs out there. Accurately estimating distances to the hole, taking into account hazards, is difficult for anyone but also put yourself in the shoes of those perhaps not as well sighted as you might be. Perhaps an invaluable tool for them for distance estimation and club selection.
Even if you are not interested in golf this kind of example gives you an idea of the different type of gadget-like applications that exist for GPS technology over and above the SatNav in the car or running watch on your wrist (TomTom do those too of course in case you’ve been asleep for the last few years!).

London, 26 September 2014 TomTom today launches the all new TomTom Golfer, a GPS sports watch designed to make it easy for golfers to improve their game. Unique course graphics clearly show accurate distances to hazards and layups, and the best approach to the green.
The TomTom Golfer uses graphics to clearly show key golf course data from more than 34,000 golf courses across the globe on its extra-large screen. Course updates are delivered wirelessly via a unique smartphone app, so golfers can trust they are playing with the most up-to-date course information.
“Understanding the challenges ahead will help golfers to improve their score,” says Corinne Vigreux, managing director, TomTom Consumer. “The TomTom Golfer provides at-a-glance graphics to critical course data, helping golfers to make smarter decisions and improve how they play.”
The TomTom Golfer is designed for golfers, with a lightweight and slim appearance. It uses GPS technology to automatically recognise nearby courses and find the next hole. A golfer can also keep track of the score, distance and time of a round.
The TomTom Golfer can be pre-ordered from www.tomtom.com and is available in white/green or dark grey/green priced £199.99.
