Review – Nathan LightSpur

Nathan LightSpur Review
Nathan LightSpur Review

I saw this concept last year and thought it was a good idea. I never followed it through to find out who sold it. Well we now have the answer with the Nathan LightSpur. It’s a single rear-of-shoe mounted LED light source which, as you run, enables those behind you to see you.

Positives: It’s light and clips on very tightly. The ‘clip’ has some tiny pins which will not damage a shoe but will stop it from moving. The photo above was taken in strong daylight and the clip is quite visible. Easily cleaned and moved from shoe to shoe.

Negatives: Not visible from the front and marginally visible from the side. If your foot ‘strays’ towards your other leg when you raise the foot, the clip might catch onto your other inside leg (eg calf).

Comments:  The LightSpur is marketed as weather resistant with a battery life of 100+hours. It takes two replaceable watch batteries. There is a constant light mode which I prefer the looks of but the blink mode is probably the best/safest one to use. The manufacturer suggests that TWO sources of light on your body make you more visible. Fits most shoe sizes up to Size 15.

This Nathan product is the first of a few that I am going to review – they are GREAT XMAS stocking fillers (links below). I thought I was the runner that had everything. Nathan have just enlightened me!

Prices: UK £17.68 , US $17.21 .

Disclaimer: I was sent this as a freebie and I intend to keep and use it. This site focusses more on higher-end sport gadgets – I either buy or loan those from the supplier.

My favourite kit and nutrition

  • Garmin charging puck — the fastest and most reliable way to top up your Garmin before a session. I use one.
  • Ravemen FR300 — Front light that mounts directly under your Garmin or Wahoo head unit. Keeps your bars clean and your beam pointed where it matters. I use one.
  • Body Glide – The blue anti-chafe stick that all swimmers and many runners use. I use it.
  • Maurten — The race nutrition trusted by elite athletes. Gels and drink mixes engineered to be easy on the stomach. I use them.
  • Garmin Varia RTL515 — A radar rear light that alerts you to vehicles approaching from behind. Pairs with your Edge or Garmin watch. I use this model.
  • Favero Assioma Pro RS2 — The power-meter pedals most serious cyclists choose. Accurate, easy to move between bikes. I use this model.
  • Garmin Forerunner 970 — A serious choice for a pro-grade triathlon watch. I use this.
  • Polar H10 — My daily driver for accurate, waking HRV readings.
  • Wahoo ELEMNT Roam 3 — The bike computer that has the feature Garmin lacks: usability. I use mine on most rides.
