Samsung Gear and Under Armour

When you have a super large company partnering like SAMSUNG with a super large company like UNDER ARMOUR then it’s gonna work right?

Looks like a great move with Under Armour porting their apps over to Samsung’s AndroidWear platform doesn’t it?

Except Samsung ISN’T AndroidWear. It’s TIZEN (prev RTOS) – it’s proprietary OS. Just like Garmin’s Connect IQ apps this will probably work well for a while…years maybe. But ultimately I suspect that google’s AndroidWear and Apples Watch OS will be the ones left standing.

With that said I’ve bought Samsung Gear devices as presents. I buy them in the knowledge that they will probably have a 2 year life AND THAT they will work pretty well with the receivers Samsung smartphone. So you can buy these devices with impunity if you have a Samsung smartphone.

As we’ve just seen with New Balance each hardware company has to NOW place their bets with an existing operating system. It just becomes WAY too expensive and too time-consuming to create all the functionality from scratch…note well Mssrs TomTom and Suunto

The table, below, is good. It exaplains Under Armour’s relatively recent acquisitions and states how they are different. That table gets rids of some confusion too…if only the general public had the same info !
