Cycling/Running/Triathlon ‘Watches’: New Models, Current Models and expected replacement dates. Garmin, Polar, Suunto, Wahoo, TomTom, etc

Garmin Edge on the wahoo kickr kickr17 smart trainer reviewV1.74 – 27 September2017

In this version: Suunto & Garmin plus some tidying up too.

I did say back in October 2016 that 2017 would be the year of the Garmin. And so it is.

This is my opinion of current & future devices across the GPS running/cycling market. Updates to this will be issued as and when information emerges which may include rumors, although please note that any information provided to me under NDA by manufacturers will not appear here. So there will be a few more surprises 😉 Please let me know of errors or omissions. Thank you . Enjoy.

There are more detailed thoughts on this topic (here) for the remainder of 2017

Others? What have I missed? Note information that has become available about accessories is NOT included below (too many of them). There are too many Power Meter models for me to keep track of. I have more than a passing interest in PMs for triathlon disciplines but I don’t keep an eye on the whole market. (I have a day job). I’m generally going to exclude bands like the Vivokids v2.

Recent Trends/Future Trends?: higher res colour screens; music on watch; battery-duration innovation; 1m GPS accuracy Galileo – now confirmed in Garmin FORETREX; vendor apps/app store (eg for the Fitbit Ionic); WORKOUT DATA standards, openness and integration; mapping/navigation (on watch and thru SIM); support for novel accessories & sensor data – environmental (weather), physiological (hydration, blood glucose) & spatial (radar); optical HR; deep smartphone integration (AW2, Apple); simultaneous dual-band recording (ZWIFT+your main recording device with BLE); on-watch SIM card/eSIM.

Future Challenges: Music on watches has still not been properly addressed but how will streaming services be handled other than through on-watch SIM (Apple Watch)/eSIM?

Hi there! How possible is the inclusion of music storage in the FR 645?

quite possible.
against it: trend is to streaming. will require good BLE connection to headphone (tomtom had issues initially) – this will be new for garmin. needs storage (but garmin know how to store maps so s/be ok)

TT Runner 2 is not “Effectively Discontinued”. The watch keeps getting new updates, Apart from that – great work – as always.

I’m aware that you cannot disclose any info under NDA, so I will not ask when FR 645 is finally coming. May I ask though if we should expect anything significant that we have not seen in the Fenix 5 series and Vivoactive 3? Thx for sharing.

“effectively discontinued” in the sense that the TT r3 is the same and a complete replacement. but yes you at otherwise right
I cannot disclose info under NDA. I am not under NDA with garmin and that is why I can speak more honestly about them.
fenix 5 – I mean yes. in the post it says there will be a PLUS version next year. there are other articles on this site about what might be in it eg GALILEO positional stuff
vivoactive 3 eesh wait a minute it’s not even widely available yet 🙂 😉 garmin do add functionality to watches over time, so I would expect taht
