In the biggest surprise of the day, Team Grenadier/Sky/Ineos announce rookie Egan Bernal as Team Leader for 2020’s delayed Tour de France in September. Seriously though, even despite his recent injury niggle, this wasn’t a surprise.
Perhaps more of a real surprise is that Chris Froome is out of the TdF squad as is Welsman Geraint Thomas. Here’s the TdF team sheet:
- Andrey Amador
- Egan Bernal
- Richard Carapaz (debut)
- Jonathan Castroviejo
- Michal Kwiatkowski
- Luke Rowe (Wales)
- Pavel Sivakov
- Dylan van Baarle
Instead, @TeamINEOS are instead aiming to secure 3 Grand Tour successes in 2020 with Froome captaining at the Vuelta and Thomas the leader at the Giro. As always with Ineos/Sky they seem to have a rather good plan.
Looking ahead, the Israel Start-Up Nation team announced that Froome would ride for the squad from 2021 and seek to win a record-equalling fifth Tour de France title. Froome will probably be back to optimal fitness by then but will his years have cranked up by just one-too-many?
