Endomondo to Shut

Sad news for Endomondo. Owner, Under Armour, has announced that the service will be retired on 31 December 2020.

Source: UnderArmor

Premium memberships will be cancelled on Nov 30th, 2020, and Under Armour will be enticing users to migrate to MapMyRun and to sign up there to the premium service. However, even if you do move to MapMy Run you will lose these

  • Personal Bests
  • Training Plans
  • Profile information and account settings
  • Friends
  • Activity Feed posts, comments, and pictures
  • Challenges
  • Commitments

In highly related news, Under Armour also announce Q3.2020 earnings which have some posiitve points but which also point out “material impacts” and an expected loss of at least $800m for FY2020. Ouch. Looking to the future, the following is a key take-out of their aspirations:

“The MapMyFitness platform, which includes MapMyRun and MapMyRide, remains a crucial element of Under Armour’s digital strategy, as does its connected footwear business.”

Let’s hope that actions follow on from those words.

Under Armour (UA) had its problems before CV-19 and, no doubt (at all), CV-19 has caused UA further financial difficulties with its retail business, indeed UA state that in “…retail stores, traffic trends remain challenged”. So much so that UA first hinted at reducing its software and services activities when, in July, they put one of its other apps up for sale (MyFitnessPal). MyFitnessPal has now been sold off too ($345m). Plus who knows if the situation will worsen as the USA and Europe plan to return to normal work?

That said, I’m still a little surprised that Endomondo will be no more, so soon. I update and publish a casual ‘sports app spreadsheet‘ once or twice a year and Endomondo IS well-rated with good downloads. Perhaps this illustrates to potential buyers of apps that the number of downloads and number of users doesn’t necessarily say too much about the number of PAYING SUBSCRIBERS and related revenue streams – ask STRAVA.

I suspect that this is a further manifestation of the obvious trend that I’ve talked about here for the last couple of years. With short-term exceptions, sports data is moving toward Garmin’s, Apple’s, Strava’s and Google’s repositories. In my opinion, the long-term commercial future lies in 3rd party services working off Apple and Google’s sports (and health) data sets.

Sports App Popularity – Alternatives: Endomondo? Garmin? Strava? Nike? Runtastic? Runkeeper? Komoot

My favourite kit and nutrition

  • Maurten — the race nutrition trusted by elite athletes. Gels and drink mix engineered to be easy on the stomach.
  • Garmin 90-degree charging adapter — the small adapter that keeps your charging cable tidy at the stem. Essential for race day.
  • Garmin charging puck — the fastest and most reliable way to top up your Garmin before a session.
  • Ravemen FR300 — front light that mounts directly under your Garmin or Wahoo head unit. Keeps your bars clean and your beam pointed where it matters.
  • Garmin Varia RTL515 — radar rear light that alerts you to vehicles approaching from behind. Pairs with your Edge or Garmin watch.
  • Stryd — the footpod that brings running power to your Garmin. The single most useful running upgrade I have made.
  • Favero Assioma Pro RS2 — the power meter pedals most serious cyclists end up choosing. Accurate, easy to move between bikes.

  1. Hopefully some users of Endomondo will buy the app to revive international connection through a kickstarter. I hated the mapmy platforms which split up sports, not having all fitness options like weight lifting to fencing. Endorphins I received from users helped me through some dark moments in life that church and family could not carry.
