myles links to Strava App | Virtual Challenges with a twist
Much of Europe is in lockdown and I know our friends across the pond have other matters on their minds right now. But I liked the timeliness of the new myles app which creates virtual challenges for you or friends from links to your STRAVA activities. Ideal for those lockdown rides on Zwift or runs outside in the park. Even better, it seems to be free on both iOS and Android.
Challenges are a popular feature on STRAVA, I don’t use them much myself but I know a lot of you do. myles seemed to add an interesting twist so here I am telling you about it.
How It Works
You choose a challenge from a small, curated list that includes challenges such as the Icelandic Loop, Inca Trail, UK Lands End to John o’Groats, Sydney to Perth and US Coast-to-coast. You can have two active challenges and they can be either a RUN or BIKE challenge, or a solo or group challenge.
The link to STRAVA then brings the total mileage from your new RUNs/RIDEs and those workout totals contribute to progress on the virtual challenge.
The app lets you check the %age completion of each challenge as well as the virtual progress of the challenge on a map. Here are some screenshots of the challenges I completed earlier!
Simple! Simple ideas are often the best.
Maybe they could do an Everesting one for metres climbed, or an Everest Combo which starts out from Kathmandu and requires distance and elevation both to get you to the fabled summit? Well, I thought it was a good idea.
I had a new resolution for 2020 where I tried to sample a small bit of new road on each ride this year. Partly to better get to know my local area and partly because I was bored! A great Strava add-on for that is WANDRER which tracks my progress on new road mileage covered, showing me how many new KMs I’ve added on each ride and seeing it all on a map too. There’s also a premium version which will give you a map of roads you’ve not cycled on – it even works on your Wahoo Elemnt.

These are just a couple of guys…be nice. They’ve never spoken to me nor paid me anything to publicise their app. I just got a press release and played with their app. I get nothing from the download.
