Garmin Body Battery sync to Lumen | Phase 2 Integration

Lumen has today released deeper integration between their Fat/Carb burning smartphone app and the Garmin Connect IQ platform.

The intention here is to allow Garmin users to better understand the links between their fat/carb burn status alongside heart & health lifestyle data from your Garmin (Body Battery).

What is Lumen?

Lumen is a handheld device that measures the CO2 in the inhalation and exhalation of your breaths, it uses that measurement to determine your current fat/carb burning state. Your ability to burn fat is vital information for athletes and dieters alike.

In late 2020 the Lumen smartphone app was linked up to Garmin Connect as well as to a Lumen CIQ widget for Garmin devices.

Garmin & Lumen Sync – What’s New

From what I can see the Garmin CIQ widget remains unchanged. However, the latest Lumen smartphone app pulls across Body Battery data (HRV), resting HR and high HR from Garmin Connect. So Lumen devotees now have the ability to see how the result of lifestyle changes impacts correlations with the fat/carb burn info in the Lumen app.

Now, the Garmin+Lumen linkup is not new and has already been running for over 3 months since I first used it. In this time the Lumen data team has been looking at the performances of anonymised groups of Garmin/Lumen users and their fat-burning rate. The key takeout from their research is based on 11,000 post-workout metabolism measurements and the data shows that 70% of users are seeing a shift to fat as a source of fuel. Which is a highly positive finding.

Any athlete knows the importance of improving fat utilisation for fuelling but only Lumen/Garmin users can see this quantified every day in their training. Such increases in post-workout fat utilisation improve your ability to be faster and improve your ability to lose weight. It’s a fundamental physiological pointer.

What is Garmin Body Battery?

Garmin Body Battery is determined from a combination of Heart Rate Variability, Stress, and Activity to estimate your true energy reserves throughout the day. The higher the number, the more energy is available. It is a single numerical score between 1 and 100 that changes frequently throughout the day based on the factors shown in this table.

How Did I Benefit From Lumen?

Detailed discussions are in the Lumen review. But I would say a couple of things now to whet your appetite. Firstly Lumen brought a sense of reality to my athletic endeavours, whilst I thought I was fat-adapted (I’m an Ironman and I should do fairly well in the BTF AG Half Iron champs this year), Lumen made me realise there is more work to do and that a focus on my aerobic base is still important. Secondly, I don’t especially NEED to lose weight but I was trying to get rid of a stubborn Kg or so and Lumen helped me quantify the effect of both what I was eating and when I was eating it…simply eating my last meal much earlier was one quick win for example.
