Garmin Forerunner 965 Opinion
The Garmin Forerunner 965 Review is Now Live
Price: USA $599 (REI Pre-Order **OPEN**), UK £599, EU649
Today we see Garmin’s first-ever dedicated triathlon watch to have a high-resolution AMOLED touchscreen. What’s more, it’s Garmin’s largest 1.4″ display size but packed into the same medium case size (47.1mm) as its FR955 predecessor from 2022. To achieve that Garmin has shrunk the black ring of aesthetic doom (bezel) yet maintained the structural integrity of the watch with a titanium bezel that also protects the toughened display.
I like many of the trivial design tweaks like the enlarged start button. Still, the fact remains that this watch, in essence, has identical features in almost every respect to the Forerunner 955 apart, that is, from the screen and battery life. The latter comes at an unbelievably good 31 hours in GPS-only mode (22 hours with SatIQ, 10.5 hours with music).
If you have the 955, that’s pretty much all you need to know and that was enough information to get me to return my 955 and upgrade for my triathlon endeavours, which I would have done regardless of whether or not I was writing this blog. I’m a sucker for a pretty screen. But the $/£/Eu600ish price tag is disconcertingly high, especially when you consider that there is no sapphire screen option…even though the 955 was Gorilla DX glass I relatively easily scratched it and so I worry about also scratching the improved Gorilla Glass 3 on the 965(via @dcr but not as per garmin.com) – Wiggle was awesome at taking the 955 back despite the scratch #Kudos.
The main differentiator to the Fenix/Epix line of watches is that the 965 is only available in one size. At 53g and 13.2mm, it’s a lightweight, slim competition watch. You also do NOT get several of the headline Garmin features on the 965 that you would get on other Garmin watches namely QI charging, solar charging, mic/speaker audio, ECG and LTE.
More thoughts further below, here’s the summary

What Else Is New?
Garmin’s marketing material will emphasize the new ability to calculate wrist-based running dynamics solely from sensors within the watch, and it might also mention a new training Load Ratio. While these features have limited use and narrow appeal, they pale in comparison to the breadth and depth of true triathlon-related features on the watch that have been carried over from its predecessors. If you are new to Garmin’s triathlon watches, you just need to know that the Forerunner 965 has every software feature you need.
The newness extends to the menus and screens, which are now more colourful and of a higher resolution. Many aesthetic tweaks give the screens a superior look compared to their predecessors.
CIQ6 compatibility is another new feature that provides slightly better watch faces. With CIQ6, developers can show new data on complications that, when touched, can launch other functionality.
Take Out
Along with the Forerunner 265, this watch has been heavily leaked for many weeks so nothing today is a surprise. Nor is it a surprise that Garmin is doubling down on AMOLED. Garmin purists will love the awesome battery lives that accompanied the older MIP tech screens however they make up the minority and the future for Garmin sports watches lies with pretty AMOLED screens especially as Garmin now delivers a more than usable battery life.
This is an excellently featured triathlon watch and is the one for the competition to beat. The only angles that remain for a competitor to beat the 965 are aesthetics to your taste; a niche feature you need; and highly integrated smart features.
Apple Watch is shaping up to be a commercial competitor to Garmin sports watches but ‘only’ for occasional triathletes who mostly want a daily watch that works well with their iPhones.
Price, Availability & Returns
I expect availability on or around 14 March, despite what the various stores and Garmin sites say. This was a date I released some time ago that I was told was the announcement date but it was more likely the availability date.
Availability seems to be for mid-to-late March and there will be no discounting. It’s likely that not all Amazon stores will have stock in March, check carefully as Amazon often claim to have stock when they don’t. Buying from Garmin gives the best chance of stock and if you want to support this site then please use the following links which are all from reputable retailers who won’t lie about stock!
As of 13 March 2023, there are no stores with stock. If you pre-order, you risk your store getting late stock from Garmin. Although REI, listed below, should be good.
The listing for Wiggle, below, is live as of 5 March. HOWEVER there is no stock, you can’t pre-order and you can’t even set a notification for when it is in stock (doh!).

Garmin has started to add holographic seals to the cartons. Once broken, some retailers will not accept returns and you can’t re-seal them. Choose your retailer wisely.

Gustav Iden just upgraded to a f955 last week. New Garmin day!
Is he sad today or does the Norwegian Train know something we don’t?
as a 955 owner, what i need to know is whether the 965 will be a marketing concept only, absolutely destroyed in practice by an endless stream of software bugs that garmin engineers seem incapable of resolving, instead introducing more with each update. most particularly, whether the battery life will actually be about 3 days in smartwatch only mode with default settings.
advice to all – DO NOT BUY THIS WATCH, at least not without waiting a while and then checking out the garmin forums to see what bugs people have encountered. don’t trust that since your friend has no problems that makes it safe. strangely the many bugs present seem to present constantly for some people (across multiple replacement devices) and never for others with no obvious usage difference – are you feeling lucky?
Must admit I’m tempted for the bigger brighter screen as I’m cursed with crap eye-sight. Was wondering why they would announce it & then not have availability? I’ve a friend lined up already to purchase my existing 945 but if I have to wait 6 weeks to tickle the order button there’s a good chance I could change my mind.
i dont think it will be 6 weeks…tho if you are in Ireland maybe.
Yesterday it was 4-6 weeks on the Irish garmin site, today it’s 2-3 so bit of improvement already.
And back to 5-8 weeks for 965 availability today on the Irish garmin site.
eesh, same on US site
looks like they are having to fix something, i heard the date had previously been put back.
Let’s hope all the reviews that come out early are on production devices 😉 (I’m only jealous)
Good overview !
Nice indeed of Wiggle to take back your scratched watch ! How long was it after you bought it ? I saw they had a 365 return window but that sounds too good to be true…unless you store it untouched ?
As for screen protectors they were rather easy to fit in on a 955 but the slightly rounded glass of the 965 (like the Venu 2) makes it more of a challenge. I struggled to fit one properly on my V2 and due to the shape they can’t be glass like on the 955.
6 months or so.
it’s definitely out of warranty damage. i even said to them to refund me $100 less but they did the full whack. (Garmin offered a repair for a reasonablish £120ish)
Reading their returns policy .. I have no idea how you managed to get them to take it!

i did at as ‘me’ rather than as the5krunner, i was just nice…so were they (overly so). I am a ‘platinum’ wiggle member, maybe that amounts to something
All the reviewers say how amazing the battery life is in GPS only mode, but the Epix2 with AMOLED lasts significantly longer:
Epix2: GPS Only: Up to 42 hours (30 hours always-on)
Same story for the 265/265S where it also is bit less than 255/255s. Now if the reason for 965 is smaller battery due to thinner case (and more efficient CPU for smartwatch mode), then that’s good trade-off. But it’s rather average compared to Epix2 despite slightly larger display.
Epix 2 review with 1.3″ display: https://the5krunner.com/2022/04/29/garmin-epix-2-review/. yes the battery life is longer with a larger watch case (hence battery) and smaller display
in the article, above, i describe the battery life as ‘usable’ and state that ‘care has to be taken’ when choosing this watch for an ironman because of the battery life.
Is it realy a triathlon watch? Is there a quick fit bike mount (like as for Fenix/Epix 2 series)? The Epix 2 and it´s auto dimming is a mess on the heandlebars (really not usable/readable). Is Garmin assuming that people use an Edge on the handlebars and wear the fr965 at the wrist?
yes it’s really a triathlon watch.
no bike mount afaik, probably a 3rd party one somewhere will exist
i don’t think garmin assumes we use a n edge on the handlebars but i think that is a good setup
as i think i said above, wear the watch on the underside of the arms and it works well enough on aerobars for short course. for long course most people will have a bike computer
