Investigation into Youghal Ironman Event Deaths
via: @JohnK, thank you
Irish Police (Gardaí) have confirmed they are working to provide additional information for the Cork County Coroner’s investigation into the deaths of two experienced triathletes at the recent Ironman 70.3 event. Specifically, they are requesting video footage from the public.
We can reasonably assume that such evidence would influence the Coroner’s decision as to the cause of death. Once the cause of death is officially established then this will make the legal routes ahead far clearer. If you can help, please do so now.
Anyone present is encouraged to reach out to the authorities at Midleton on 021-4621550 or via email at Mi*******************@ga***.ie. Police will then request the footage at some point in the future.
At present, there is no request for the public to submit their footage directly. Representatives from the investigation team will liaise with individuals for proper footage acquisition.
Confusion exists around the safety of the event with Triathlon Ireland saying that it could not sanction (permit) the event because of safety but with Ironman Group claiming that it didn’t receive such information until after the swim portion of the event had ended and has thus threatened to sue Triathlon Ireland for defamation/liabel.
The somewhat unseemly public release of information by both parties appears to have now stopped and both are no longer issuing public statements due to the ongoing investigation.
My Position: I want you and I to be able to trust the safety of the events in which we compete.
