Garmin Descent MK3 / MK3I / MK3S / MK3SI
t’s six new flavours of (probably) Fenix Pro, this time round being two D2 Mach 1 Pro Aviators and four Descent Dive Watches. the information is leaked from Garmin MEXICO via @FLO.
The background here is a little bit interesting but mostly only if you are in the market for a dive-grade watch

Current Models
The current models are based on the Fenix and are Mk2S, MK2, and MK2i. The ‘S’ model is the smaller 43mm model whereas the regular size, unusually, is the larger 52mm case. The “‘i” variant is only available in the larger size and represents support for Garmin’s AIR INTEGRATION dive features (hardware).
This time around it looks like we are getting a straight boost up to the Fenix 7 PRO level but with the addition of the AIR INTEGRATION on the smaller-sized watch – totalling 4 models. Naturally, these new watches will have the Gen 5 optical HR sensor with ECG (USA).
If you are hoping for an AMOLED version then rumours suggest you are in luck, increased brightness in the depths would be pretty cool so Garmin should hit the sweet spot here.
Pricing
The Descent series is even more expensive than the equivalent Fenix. We will be looking at something like $1400/£1200 for this watch with a premium for the Air Integration support and a further premium for AMOLED.
Garmin also offers a cheaper Dive watch called Descent G1 and D1 Solar, these are based on the Instinct.
Take Out
TL;DR – 4 new top-end dive watches at least one model with AMOLED but this time with the addition of AIR INTEGRATION in the smaller size.
If you can wait 6 months (and it will be a hard wait for me) they may release an AMOLED variant just like they did with the Tactix 7 Series
not sure it will happen for the dive watches. for all the other fenixes it should happen
They probably don’t ship enough of the Decent to warrant an amoled variant.
This is Garmin. They would create a new SKU (with custom packaging) to sell a single unit.
Actually looking at that list, none of them say ‘Solar’ which could imply they are all AMOLED.
the current generation has no solar option. i don’t expect these new ones too either
quatix 7 (the ship/yacht version) has solar/amoled options. i don’t expect the new version to have amoled…but it could
So here’s what I think makes sense. If the “repair prices” are already set, we are looking at a completely developed watch now. Next big relevant event? Garmin has been named a Category A1 member of the board of directors for DEMA 2023, along with XS Scuba. They will have the lion’s share in the exhibition. DEMA 2023 – I expect a release date to be around that time.
Let’s not forget that Garmin is a horsepower, they are a much larger company than Shearwater, Aqualung, and Suunto COMBINED. Also, Garmin took on Vertical Blue sponsorships like a storm. I am loving the market and the competition since covid subsided.
there are likely know inernal changes to the watch in line with fenix 7 pro compared to its predecessors
what specific dive related changes do you envisage (IDK, genuinely asking)
In terms of non-dive features, I expect all the new fitness and health metrics from the Fenix 7. I think that should be basic.
For dive computer features, it’s possible they could add a different deco algorithm like VPM-B, and fix the limited configurability for alerts, and gas switch prompts that pop up at the most unhelpful times. Now the watch itself is considered small size for beyond recreational diving – one way to fix this would be a brighter and sharper AMOLED screen, although I am not optimisic as battery life is crucial for a dive computer – but you never know with Garmin’s crazy battery hardware.
I don’t expect the MK3 to feature PO2 monitoring, it’s just too small to accomodate a 4 or 5 pin connectors. Now a wireless PO2 monitoring, that would be revolutionary.
One thing I REALLY hope they don’t do is integrate a torch for underwater use. It would be useless and maybe they can use that space for something else.

Dema just announced a booth will feature MK3, with AMOLED, torch, and underwater texting. I think it will be based on the Epix Pro and not Fenix 7
yes, ty
epix pro is based on the Fenix! but with a pretty screen
Yep, a reveal of the MK3 Series at DEMA 2023 would make sense.
I dont SCUBA dive a lot, several times a year and the occasional 2 or 3 day trip but when I do go it would be nice to have the one watch that does all the fitness stuff I do and record SCUBA.
I had an Oceanic ATOM 2 for 14 years, with AI, but then finally sold it and got a Descent G1 Solar on sale, it works pretty well for diving and everything else, but the screen is a little small.
So I also got a FR 965, which is my daily watch since the AMOLED screen is just so much nicer to read.
I put off buying the MK1 and 2 but I think the MK3 could be the one I finally bite the bullet on being based on the Fenix 7X Pro.
If only I had time for more hobbies, taking up scuba diving and a Descent would be awesome.
I really hope Garmin adds recreational scuba to the Fenix/Epix/Tactix lines, vis-a-vis Apple Ultra. For the outdoor adventurers who dive on holiday couple times per year (raises hand).
They have Garmin G1 solar based on the instict2
It looks like the released new D2 Mach 1 Pro watches in 47mm & 51mm versions. What surprises me with this and the recent MARQ watches is that they do not have the new Elevate sensors.
They also do not have the new sleep coach feature released on the Venu 3.
It clearly shows the disconnect between the outdoor dev team and the fitness dev team.
Why would anyone buy these premium watches without the latest sensors found on the Epix 2 Pro and Venu 3 watches.
yep, 100% agree. it’s very strange.
I mean if the elevate sensor goes on a lower end Instinct then fair enough. but these watches are all top end stuff (D2 gets new elevate and ECG tho)
