Garmin Edge 1050 – First Photo

This content was replaced by: Garmin Edge 1050 Review / Opinion

That image came from an unknown source in Asia via Reddit. I don’t know if it’s real. Maybe it is a photoshopped image?

The shape is very much like earlier Bryton bike computers and, if this is real, it remains to be seen which of 2024’s new bike computers will win the FUGLY title…Garmin or Coros Dura. At least with Coros Dura (Solar), it’ll likely be half the price, have twice the battery life and a feature-full software interface that is easy and intuitive to navigate. Garmin?…less so.

Honestly, other than for testing, I wouldn’t have that on my handlebars. It seems that Garmin’s software user-experience designer was ‘promoted’ to hardware design. #Sigh. However, there are already a few new changes from the 1040’s interface, so I guess their old role has already been filled.

Here’s the second photo. It shows a slight wrap-around effect on the screen and looks better in this render than in real life (above).

Take Out

The Edge 1050 does not seem to be a direct replacement for the 1040. Instead, it offers an alternative with a superior resolution screen rather than superior battery life or solar which are only on the 1040 models.

Leading Designer: “If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it”

Garmin: “We fixed it.”

I can’t imagine my taste is so bad that I am wrong about the hardware design. Maybe I’m deluding myself? It will be interesting to see how Garmin handles any negative press coverage.

  1. At Unbound in Kansas a couple weeks ago I lined up next to a Garmin employee running a prototype “new” Garmin 1040. I asked if it was a 1050 and she said “no, a new prototype 1040.” Garmin had a major booth at unbound and of course Emporia is less than two hours from their headquarters. I glanced at the computer and it appeared as a 1040. My take is that maybe there could be an interim release such as a 1040+. That said, as soon as the race started, when she clicked the start button, the computer died on her. She was requesting a Garmin employee on the sidelines to get her Garmin watch. As we rolled slowly through the first couple blocks of Emporia, the computer came back on. Anyway, there could be more than one release coming or there could be just a 1040+.

    1. interesting.
as it failed it was clearly a new Garmin!
maybe it had a fake case to hide what it really was. otherwise, i’m reasonably sure that hat you saw was not next week’s product.

  2. Any news on a new wahoo? Someone needs to come out with a slim aero option. The releases this year are shockers, apart from the igpsport but the software on that isn’t up to scratch.

  3. Did a quick google picture search for Garmin Edge “1050” and following picture at the Garmin site (see link below) could be found. It really looks like it is having those cut edges but also a better resolution.
The filename of this picture is “edge-1050-cf-lg.jpg”, so quite sure this might be the real new 1050.

  4. While performing a picture search at google for Garmin Edge “1050” if found a picture of the new 1050 at the Garmin Taiwan Webpage (see link below to the google picture page). This link doesnt work on the Garmin site anymore but the cache at google give “edge-1050-cf-lg.jpg” as file name.
The unit is truly having these somehow cut edges but it seems also to have a better resolution.

  5. The rounded shape of the display means that very likely there wont be any space for buttons at the side of the unit (like at the 840).

  6. One assumes the rounded corners at the bottom allow it to be mounted closer to the bars as corners are an issue as you do the quarter turn.

  7. It got more edgy! . . . . . . Sorry for that lame pun.

But seriously, it looks a bit fresher than the 1040, which looked like a mobile from 10 years ago.
And don’t get me started on those crome-ish fake premium buttons on the bottom.

Not a big fan of the curved display though. But it’s something different in a realm where all the products basically look the same.

  8. 161g would be much heavier than current Gen Edge 1040 (126g). Doesn’t seem likely given the roughly similar dimensions

    1. might include the weight of the mount. IDK. I’ve not seen the full specs only partial ones via a third party.
battery life is lower so maybe the consumption of the screen is quite large and hence a larger battery was needed to keep the battery life reasonable??? a larger battery is heavier

  9. A week ago I bought Edge 1040 Solar for €500 on sale. Do you think I should return it? I care about solar charging and apparently the 1050 won’t have it.
