More: Coros Apex 4 Review

Thanks to u/InternationalMine660 for the composite image below showing some of the new high-level specs for the upcoming Coros Apex 4.

I’ll go through each, one-by-one, and add what I think. Please add anything I’ve missed below. It’s a bit of an odd image, though.

  1. A more detailed map is self-explanatory, I suppose. Coros maps are not super detailed, but I’m not entirely sure they will benefit much from adding more detail; they already do the job. More detail might cause readability issues on the smaller model.
  2. Dual-range barometer—this is a new phrase to me. It sounds like Coros incorporates two sensors, once focused at high precision over short ranges—useful when going up stairs or walking up a hill. A second one would react better over a larger range without needing GPS correction. I could see that it might be useful for rappelling, skydiving, rapid descending when cycling, or maybe hot air ballooning when rising. This seems like a feature-too-far for me.
  3. 30x faster maps and graphics – Coros is already pretty decent with screen rendering and shames Garmin. Rightly so. If they’ve made the screen render faster, that’s great…taking it to unnecessary refreshing levels! That said, I’ve used cheap watches like the Amazfit T-Rex 3 Pro, which has excellent screen rendering, and you notice it in events like swiping between pages. In my opinion, it adds to the usability experience but isn’t strictly necessary for a sports watch.
  4. We have confirmation of the two case sizes and battery lives: 41  hours (42mm) and 65 hours (46mm). That’s presumably dual frequency GNSS w/AOD.
  5. Vertical GPS Algorithms—This is probably linked to the dual-range barometer and confirms my suspicion that this is a climbing-related feature.
  6. GPS – Precision that holds true – Maybe they’ve got an even better GNSS chip? Garmin’s Synaptics is the best, in my opinion. (I spent a decade saying how awful Garmin’s GPS accuracy was, so I think you have to trust me when I say it’s now the best!)
  7. Record Voice Pins – This sounds like a Garmin feature (?) where you can record and attach a voice note to a GPS point. This presumably will sync within the Coros ecosystem (ahem). But the real trick would be how this might get sent to other platforms in a FIT file. I don’t know if that is possible, cool if so.
  8. I guess that also means confirmation of a decent microphone and speaker.
  9. Hands-free calls—don’t get excited. These are connected calls. You are within range of your smartphone, but the speaker and mic may still have relatively poor audio quality and volume.
  10. APEX 4s 3rd Generation—This confirms the name of the smaller case size as “Coros Apex 4s.” I suppose ‘3rd generation’ refers to the fact that this should have been called Apex THREE, but, for some reason, wasn’t. If you factor in pro versions, there’s probably a semantic argument against what I just said there.

  1. A thing I just recently noticed about how Garmin does maps vs everyone else is that the triangle indicating the user is well below center at about 1/4 of the screen on a Garmin but is centered for everyone else. The map rotates around the arrow.

In practice this makes the rendered field of where you are going much larger on a Garmin than any of the others at a given zoom level.

The way everyone other than Garmin does it is worse. I wonder why they don’t use the off-center HERE arrow unless there is a Garmin patent or it’s just harder to do.

  2. The new barometer seems something geared more to weather pressure changes (so you can have a more accurate storm alert for example). So I guess you’ll have a “normal” tailored to altitude change (incline, stairs, power calculations) and another one more tuned to trends, for the weather.

    1. that doesn’t sound right to me. just sounds like two different algorithms and one sensor. ie what already exists.

coros must be doing something different to make the claim for the new feature

  3. ChatGPT gave several options for what dual range could be, it could mean switching between modes, 2 pressure changes, 2 sensors, etc. You’re probably right, it makes more sense to just have 1 sensor, otherwise they would clearly mention WORLD FIRST TWO BAROMETERS!

Also there’s no mention of dive modes or maritime activities, so it won’t be geared for underwater depth.

  4. Waiting for Polar to add connected voice calls and SMS replies. Looks like way to go to defend from Huawei and others

    1. the bluetooth profiles to do that cant be difficult to implement.
so it must be down to getting a decent speaker and mic integrated intot he design. is that more importnat than an LED to Polar?

      coros are more nimble!
