A Sending Stuff Back Day

A sending stuff back day

Wahoo had kindly offered me a KICKR RUN Treadmill, but I haven’t decided if I have the space or the headroom for it. Instead, I’m trying a cheaper, smaller format from a non-branded supplier. This arrived yesterday, and I was prompted to clear out some of the larger items shown above to make space.

I’m a bit of a border, which is great on days like today, as I have every box safely stored ‘somewhere’. On every other day of the year, it’s ‘not so great’ as I have no space. My partner is also a bit of a border, so you can imagine that we are pretty adept climbers, able to make our way over mounds of boxes and wires. Obviously, if you open any cupboard in the house, about 15 bike computers or watches will fall out.

Some people have old-world glass storage jars in their kitchen full of multi-coloured pulses and pasta – I have those same trendy jars, but mine are full of USB cables and an unfeasibly large number of Apple Watch and Whoop straps.

I have 5 KICKRs at the moment, and 4 are going back soon. You only need so many! I tend to keep old models of everything, including watches, for the occasional shot of the current product versus previous ones (aka I horde them). I did this with a nice photo for the KICKR MOVE, below, but some of my other hoarded stuff spoils the background. I need to get organised.

Wahoo are taking back some of the items, perhaps to sell as reconditioned (IDK), but the older ones will be donated to a triathlon club of their choice. Nice!

Q: Do you get to keep gadgets and kit?

A: Well, I’ve kept some of it for years, but I don’t see any of it as my property, i.e. they are media loaners. I’m sure other media sites return items more quickly than me, and other sites give stuff to friends or sell them. I’m always quite surprised at how brands don’t chase me to return gear as much as they used to.

Q: Do you buy the stuff you use for your own training?

A: Pretty much. I don’t get freebies from Garmin or Apple like some other sites, and I tend to use those brands most for my running and general life. i.e. I buy them with my own money. It’s been a VERY expensive last 12 months.

  1. Hey TFK – Do you have any suggestions on how to monitor comments on your sites? Is there an overall RSS feed? Often I forget when/where I’ve commented and I would like to circle back on commentary for topics I’m interested in.

  2. P.S. one way to drive engagement with your site is a good comment/forum/community, I know I would enjoy it more if I were able to follow comment threads more easily.

    1. hi
      ty for the suggestion.
yes, i did do that several years ago and one reader kindly helped with the moderation.

however the issue quickly became managing a huge volume of spam. the spam rightfully annoyed people and took up too much time to get rid of.
that said, it was a while ago. the spam filters i have on comments must be 975 accurate meaning that 3 real comments will be incorrectly spammed per 100. I can jsut about live with that as there is also a 1% rate at which spam comments actuially get posted. bottom line: it’s virtually no work for me and only the 1% of peopel who are spammed get a bad experience

  3. I can understand that, what I’m saying is keep your current spam-restriction but find some way that users can follow comment threads (like an RSS feed). I tried adding the link to the comments in each post to an rss reader but that didn’t work either. I’d be fine just being able to monitor for new comments (through a subscription feed), but then I also don’t want to sign up for email updates either. Oh well, I understand it’s not a high priority, just providing some feedback.
