Best Apple Watch for 2026: Which Model Fits Your Needs?
Welcome to your Apple Watch buyer’s guide for every lifestyle, budget, and fitness tracking need: all in a quick 5-minute read.
Headline Differences
- Apple Watch Ultra 3 is the largest, most expensive model with the longest battery life – approximately double.
- Series 11 offers the best middle-ground options; you can pay a bit more to get better case materials, two sizes, and 5G (iPhone-free) connectivity. Or pay a bit less and still bag identical features.
- Watch SE 3 has many features and the lowest price. You compromise on some features and the cheapest case materials.

Regular readers here know that I rate the Apple Watch as the best smartwatch on the market, at least for iPhone owners. Google Pixel Watch 4 does an impressive job on Android.
Apple Watch is so good because it immerses itself in the wider Apple ecosystem, offering a wide range of features and a truly something-for-everyone approach. Even better, unlike many competitor offerings, it just works. Bonus: Easy to use, and you’ll probably never notice any bugs, unlike competitors.
Apple Watches can be expensive, but if you choose the right budget model, you’ll have everything you need to track your health. It will support you through your fitness endeavours and make everyday life with your iPhone, smart home, and Apple TV 4K just that bit more friction-free.
So, let’s crack on with a quick overview guide to Apple Watch: I’ve added links to hugely detailed Apple review content for those wanting to know every detail.

Best Overall – Apple Watch Series 11
From $399/£368
Pros:
- Packed full of scientifically supported health tracking features
- All the sports tracking features most people need
- Light on the wrist
- Super bright display, dimmable at night
Cons:
- Battery life could be better; daily boost charging is required

The Apple Watch Series 11 offers modest updates to the Series 10, ones that most people won’t want, like 5G connectivity and hypertension notifications. However, the battery life will entice many to choose the Series 11 over the Series 10. Don’t be wowed by the new Sleep Score; it’s good, but it was updated on the earlier model as well. The cheaper Watch 11 models have aluminium cases, which can scuff, but Apple has made moves to address the biggest problem: a lens that is easily scratched. The new tougher Ion-X glass might help in the long term.
The new Vitals app brushes aside the metrics-mania on other watches, focusing on the body measurements that matter most so you can easily track changes and be alerted to exceptions.
The Series 11 is a perfect companion for the active parts of your life, as comfortable to wear during a workout as it is while sleeping. Gone is the need for overnight charging, with the new superfast charging, a quick boost while you shower or change is enough to tide you over.
Apple’s best-in-class health features will make Watch 11 a go-to choice for many. But it’s the overall balance adding in looks, wearability, reliability and durability for a fair price that will convince most.
Best Budget – Apple Watch SE 3
From $249/£219
Pros:
- Perfect as a first Apple Watch.
- Perfect trackable small format for kids
- Still has solid health tracking, sports tracking and smart features
- Much cheaper than a Series 11
Cons:
- Battery life requires daily charging

Apple’s SE line has always been about affordability. Apple wants to stop you from straying to buy a competitor fitness watch and convince anyone with an iPhone to try out the convenience of sharing some of its features to the wrist. It gives the core Apple Watch experience for a fraction of the price of the Series or Ultra models.
Apple Watch SE 3 was nicely improved back in September 2025. Its predecessors lacked an always-on display and a low power battery mode. They also weren’t too hot with women’s features (e.g. ovulation estimates). All that now standards corrected and bundled into SE 3.
So you would be right to think about what you are missing compared to Watch 11. You won’t get some of the more advanced health features as SE 3 has a prior generation heart rate sensor but, other than those and the case quality options, there’s not much you’ll miss. You get solid, notifications (even WhatsApp works now), make and take calls on the wrist, reliably track fitness.
SE 3 makes sense if cost is a big factor. It’s a less risky way to try an Apple Watch for the first time; maybe the case will be a bit more prone to wear and tear, but you’ll soon find out if you like what smartwatches can do for you. It’s great to get one for your kids, get the 5G version and track whilst their Watch is linked to your iPhone.
Best Battery Life – Apple Watch Ultra 3
From $799/£749
Pros:
- Up to 72 hours of battery life (14 hours of continuous GPS battery life)
- Most comprehensive activity tracking
- Most durable and premium build
Cons:
- Expensive

Apple Watch Ultra 3 has been my go-to smartwatch for the last 4 months, having used Apple Watches for many years, I can confidently say it’s the best Apple Watch ever made. It exudes premium feel, with durability honed in to perfection and top-tier software that just works.
The changes from Watch Ultra 2 are not worth mentioning, other than the 2-hour GPS battery boost (to 14 hours) and 42 hours of normal use. If you genuinely plan to do a week-long adventure and rely on your Watch, then the battery won’t cut it, and you need to get a Garmin Fenix, but for weekend adventures it will be fine. More than that, for off-grid adventures you’ll be fine as well, as ultra 3 is one of the first ever smartwatches to get satellite connectivity – mostly for emergencies.
More advanced athletes might want to understand their vitals and recovery stats or follow third party training plans: you’re all good there. What’s not good is natively following routes but, as with most things, there are 3rd party app workouts so for that you’d need the WorkOutDoors app. Perhaps the only dealbreaker is if you want to link with advanced niche sports sensors (like SmO2), you’ll struggle with Ultra 3, and it won’t control a smart trainer either.
Core directions from Apple Maps are great and link well to the iPhone. You’ll also love the fast charging, where 10 minutes on the stand while you shower or change will give you enough juice for your next workout or a full night’s sleep tracking.
Ultra 3 won’t tempt existing Ultra owners to upgrade. It will, however, stop some people unnecessarily buying Garmin Fenix watches for sports and will also attract upgrades from regular watch owners wanting more battery life, a tougher shell and that handy action button.
Best Value – Apple Watch Series 10
From ~ $250/£250
Pros:
- Pretty much the same features as with Watch 11
- Could be as cheap as some SE 3 options
- Well made
Cons:
- The cheaper Watch 10s still don’t have scratch resistant shells

The Apple Watch Series 10 was my go-to smartwatch last year, expensive at the time (stainless steel case + Sapphire lens) but now the cheaper models are great value, even more so if you can grab a refurbished one. Compared to the 2025-26 models they do all the same things and are easy to wear and easy to read and use.
The Series 10 introduced several cosmetic improvements, being the company’s thinnest and lightest ever, also with its brightest and biggest display. Plus a screen that refreshes every second compared to the per-minute refresh of the Series 9. Series 10 marked one of those annual spec bumps that were just a bit more notable than most.
Health and fitness tracking on Series 10 have market-leading GPS and heart rate foundational sensors to help properly tick all the usual boxes that smartwatch owners want: sleep tracking, heart rate, and workout tracking – all great.
Apple also introduced sleep apnoea (disturbances) and dive abilities to Watch 10.
Watch Series 10 is the gateway to a better case and top-of-the-range Apple features for a decent price. It’s the value choice.
What they all share
They all work superbly with iPhone and your smart home. When it comes to the quality of sensors, Apple are as good or slightly better than every competitor direct alternative. Apple is conservative with the Health insights and is one of the vendors I trust the most to get the science right (or as best as possible) before releasing the feature.
All Watches share customisability. You can buy tens of watch straps for every occasion and customise the look further with one of the many watch faces which themselves can be tweaked to include the smart metrics and shortcuts you need for your life.

Which Apple Watch Should You Buy?
The software features are broadly similar.
So make your decision based on the price you want to spend, battery life and durability. You’ll need a routine to keep Watch 11/SE3 charged properly, but Ultra 3’s fast charge and bigger battery give you more flexibility. Really think carefully about the cheaper aluminium cases and Ion-X glass: they really do scuff or scratch more easily, but to get a titanium case plus Sapphire lens means you pay top dollar.
