HYROX Terms

HYROX Terms

This glossary defines the fixed race format and station terminology of HYROX-style functional fitness racing. Generic strength-training terminology, including movement mechanics and programming concepts, is defined on the Strength Training glossary page, and generic running terminology, including pacing and splits, is defined on the Running glossary page, rather than here.

Quick answers

What is a 1k run interlude?
A 1k run interlude, or run segment, is the one-kilometre run completed before each of the eight fixed stations, the structural building block that alternates with station work throughout the race.

What is an age-group category in HYROX?
Age-group category is the classification of amateur competitors into bands defined by age and gender, used for results and qualification within a race division.

What is a burpee broad jump?
A burpee broad jump is a station combining a burpee with a forward jump, repeated across a set distance rather than a fixed rep count.

What is compromised running in HYROX?
Compromised running describes the degraded running form and pace a competitor experiences after a fatiguing station, distinct from normal running economy.

What is an elite qualification standard?
The elite qualification standard is the finishing time or ranking threshold required to compete in the pro division at a given event.

What is farmers carry (HYROX station)?
Farmers carry is a station requiring a competitor to carry a loaded implement in each hand over a set distance.

What is the finish corridor?
The finish corridor is the marked final section of the course leading to the finish line, typically run without further stations.

What is a functional fitness race?
A functional fitness race is a competition format combining running with fixed strength and conditioning stations; this glossary describes one specific, widely recognised format built on eight stations and eight 1km runs.

What does a judge do at a HYROX event?
A judge, or station referee, is an official assigned to a station to enforce movement standards, verify completed repetitions, and confirm the required weight or distance has been met.

What is pacing strategy in a functional fitness race?
Pacing strategy in this format is the plan for distributing effort across alternating running segments and fixed stations, since going out too hard on the run compromises station performance and vice versa.

What is a penalty lap?
A penalty lap is an additional running distance imposed for failing to complete a station to the required standard.

What are the race divisions in HYROX?
Race divisions describe the competitive category a team or individual enters: open division for standard amateur competition, pro division for athletes meeting an elite qualification standard, doubles division for two athletes completing the course together, and relay division for a team who each complete a portion of the course; an individual entering alone competes in the open or pro division rather than a separate singles category.

What is rowing as a HYROX station?
Rowing is a station performed on a rowing ergometer, requiring a competitor to complete a set distance using the same seated pulling motion as competitive rowing.

What is the RoxZone?
The RoxZone is the transition area between the running segments and the stations, where competitors move from one to the next; moving through it, including entering and exiting each station, is sometimes called station transition.

What is sandbag lunge?
Sandbag lunge is a station requiring a competitor to carry a loaded sandbag while performing walking lunges over a set distance.

What is the ski ergometer station?
The ski ergometer, commonly known by the trademarked name SkiErg, is a station performed on a stationary ski ergometer, simulating the pulling motion of cross-country skiing over a set distance.

What is the sled pull station?
Sled pull is a station requiring a competitor to pull a weighted sled toward themselves using a rope, typically performed seated or standing.

What is the sled push station?
Sled push is a station requiring a competitor to push a weighted sled across a set distance.

What is station sequence in HYROX?
Station sequence is the fixed, non-negotiable order in which the eight stations are performed: ski ergometer, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jump, rowing, farmers carry, sandbag lunge, and wall ball.

What is a time cap in HYROX?
A time cap is the maximum time allowed to complete the race, beyond which a competitor’s result is recorded as incomplete.

What is the wall ball station?
Wall ball is a station requiring a competitor to throw a weighted ball against a target on a wall for a set number of repetitions, with both the ball’s weight and the required target height varying by competitive division.

What is work-to-run ratio?
Work-to-run ratio describes the balance of effort between station work and running segments over the course of a race, a key factor in pacing strategy.

What is world championship qualification?
World championship qualification is the process, usually a top finishing position or time standard at a qualifying event, by which an athlete earns a place at the world championship.
