Wahoo Fitness occupies a position in cycling technology that no other brand has managed to hold for as long: a clear second to Garmin outdoors, and arguably the stronger name in indoor training. The company was founded in Atlanta in 2009 by Chip Hawkins, and its first product was an ANT+ key for smartphones, a small bridging device that let cyclists read sensor data from fitness hardware on a phone screen. That instinct for connecting things that were not yet connected has shaped everything Wahoo has built since.

What is less visible from the product range is the corporate story behind it. Norwest Equity Partners took a significant stake in 2018, funding the acquisitions and hardware expansion that followed. Rhone Capital took a majority position in 2021, at the height of the pandemic indoor cycling boom. The boom ended faster than the debt did. By early 2023 Wahoo had missed a debt payment and Moody’s had cut its credit rating. Chip Hawkins led a recapitalisation that same year, buying the company back from its lenders, eliminating all debt, and leaving Wahoo liquid and privately held once more. Gareth Joyce was appointed CEO in March 2024. Hawkins remains on the board.

The company is now smaller and more focused than it was at its peak. It has shed the virtual cycling platform it acquired too late, stopped making a triathlon watch, and concentrated on the two product lines where it has genuine competitive strength: the ELEMNT family of bike computers and the KICKR family of indoor trainers.


From RFLKT to ACE: the ELEMNT timeline

Wahoo’s first cycling display products were not GPS computers. The RFLKT and RFLKT+ were ANT+ bridging accessories that mirrored your smartphone screen on a handlebar-mounted unit, converting sensor signals to Bluetooth for devices that could not read ANT+ natively. Both were reviewed on this site and both illustrate the design approach Wahoo carried into everything that followed: legibility, direct smartphone pairing, and a setup process that required no manual.

The ELEMNT launched in 2016 as Wahoo’s first dedicated GPS bike computer. The ELEMNT MINI followed as a compact companion. The design was cleaner and the setup faster than anything Garmin offered at the time, and those qualities built a loyal following quickly. The BOLT arrived as a smaller, more aerodynamic option alongside the larger ELEMNT. By 2024, official Strava data showed the Wahoo BOLT had overtaken the Garmin Edge 530 in US cycling uploads, a meaningful market share figure for a company Garmin had for years treated as a secondary concern.

The Gen 2 generation, Bolt 2 and Roam 2, brought colour displays and refined navigation. Gen 3, launched across 2024 and 2025, delivered the Bolt 3, Roam 3, and the new ACE: the largest ELEMNT yet, built around a high-resolution screen suited to navigation-heavy riding. The ACE introduced Wind Dynamics, Wahoo’s use of barometric sensors to show real-time aerodynamic data on-device. The Wahoo ELEMNT Rival was the one departure from the bike computer line: a multisport triathlon watch launched in 2020, sold as the natural wrist companion to an ELEMNT on the bars. It was a capable device, with track mode, Stryd running power, structured workouts, and sleep tracking, and it carried a Wahoo on the wrist of the UTMB 2023 winner. No second generation appeared. The Rival is now discontinued. The Coros-Wahoo partnership formalised in 2026, which covers treadmill integration, data sync, and mutual hardware distribution, is the closest Wahoo currently comes to a watch strategy: Coros makes the watch, Wahoo makes the trainer, and the two platforms connect.

KICKR: the indoor training range

The KICKR smart trainer is the product that established Wahoo’s reputation. It launched in 2012 as one of the first open-source smart trainers, compatible with Zwift, TrainerRoad, and any platform that spoke ANT+ FE-C or Bluetooth FTMS. That openness, at a time when several competitors were pursuing proprietary ecosystems, was a deliberate strategic choice. It paid out through the pandemic years when indoor cycling grew faster than any other segment in the market, and it remains the reason the KICKR family integrates with more third-party software than any comparable range.

The current KICKR family spans several price points and use cases. The KICKR V6 is the flagship direct-drive trainer, reviewed in detail on this site. The KICKR Core 2 is the mid-range direct-drive option; its pairing with the Zwift Cog and Click hardware is practical but orients the setup toward the Zwift ecosystem in particular. The KICKR MOVE added fore-and-aft rocker motion to the direct-drive platform, making it the closest thing Wahoo produces to a motion trainer without buying a full smart bike. Accessories extend the indoor setup. The KICKR HEADWIND is a smart fan that adjusts output in response to speed, heart rate, or trainer power. The KICKR CLIMB is a front-wheel riser that tilts the bike to match virtual gradient changes. The KICKR AXIS feet add motion to existing KICKR trainers without replacing the unit. The KICKR Rollr is a roller platform for riders who prefer open-wheel training with some resistance control. The KICKR Steer adds physical steering input for supported apps. The KICKR RUN smart treadmill, launched in the US in 2024 and in the UK in 2025, is Wahoo’s first product outside the cycling category. It connects to running apps including Zwift and supports third-party sensors. Training software: Sufferfest, SYSTM, and RGT

Wahoo acquired The Sufferfest in July 2019, the video-based structured training platform that had built a following among indoor cyclists for its 4DP methodology: rather than reducing fitness to a single FTP figure, the Four Dimensional Power approach tests neuromuscular power, anaerobic capacity, maximum aerobic power, and functional threshold separately. The platform was rebranded as Wahoo SYSTM in 2021, expanding from cycling into yoga, strength, mental training, and running content.

In April 2022 Wahoo acquired RGT Cycling, a virtual world platform, and bundled it with SYSTM under a single Wahoo X subscription. Eighteen months later, in October 2023, RGT was closed. Wahoo cited a strategic decision to focus on structured training content. Paying subscribers received a twelve-month Zwift membership as compensation. SYSTM continues under ongoing development, including a Mental Capacity Assessment that adjusts Training Capacity scores based on cognitive readiness, and expanded load metrics covering dimensional training load across short, long, and peak training windows.


Power pedals and accessories

Wahoo acquired Speedplay in September 2019, gaining a pedal platform favoured by triathletes and time-trial riders for its wide, stable cleat and adjustable float, along with 24 patents. The POWRLINK ZERO power meter pedals, launched in 2022, integrate dual-sided power measurement directly into the Speedplay platform. They are the only power pedals Wahoo produces.

The accessories range covers heart rate monitoring from chest to wrist. The original TICKR and TICKR X established Wahoo’s HRM credentials. The TICKR Fit was a wrist-worn optical option. The Trackr Radar is a rear-facing vehicle detection light, also reviewed here, that integrates with the ELEMNT display to show vehicle proximity on-screen.


The competitive picture

Outdoors, Garmin is the primary competitor on bike computers. The two brands have contested that market for a decade, and while Garmin remains larger by volume, Wahoo holds meaningful share at the performance end, particularly among cyclists who prioritise route-following ease and fast setup over raw feature count. Hammerhead’s Karoo 3 offers a distinct approach to navigation and software and competes directly at the premium end of the market. Bryton, Magene, and iGPSport address the value and mid-range segments with increasing capability. At the less considered end of the spectrum, a sports watch or a smartphone mounted on the bars remains a legitimate alternative for many riders, and this site covers both options.

Indoors, the picture is more Wahoo’s own. Garmin’s Tacx acquisition gave it a direct-drive trainer range and a virtual platform in Tacx NEO and the online Tacx environment, but the Tacx ecosystem has not matched KICKR in third-party software integration or community depth. The Zwift-Wahoo relationship has been turbulent: Wahoo sued Zwift in October 2022 over the KICKR CORE-derived design of the Zwift Hub, settled in September 2023, and the two companies now operate as partners, with the KICKR Core 2 Zwift bundle as the visible product of that arrangement.

The Coros-Wahoo partnership announced in 2026 is the most significant competitive development in recent memory. It covers treadmill integration, cross-platform data sync, and mutual hardware distribution, and it creates the first coherent alternative ecosystem to Garmin that spans both the watch and the indoor trainer. It stops well short of a merger and the integration remains early, but the direction is clear.
