Ride with GPS: Collaborative Route Planning

Plan Rides Together: RwGPS & Collaborative Route Planning

Is it just me, or does RwGPS offer considerably more features than Strava, and does it do so through a better-designed app? Either way, its ops director, Kevin Prentice, shared another addition with me a few weeks ago.

The problem RwGPS is trying to solve here is when you cycle with a group of people who want to make and suggest changes to proposed routes. For my group and me, that involves a WhatsApp back-and-forth with one person after another, suggesting the ‘best’ route. Invariably, the person who wins out with the route selection has too much time or a bloody-mindedness to do it their way.

That all changes today.

Shared Adventures

With Collaborative Route Planning, route creators can invite others to become full collaborators. That means your teammates or club buddies can jump in and help shape the ride, from adding climbs to avoiding sketchy roads, right alongside you.

No more guesswork. No more juggling feedback. Everything happens in one place: the route page.

Game-Changing Features?

  • Seamless Collaboration – Invite friends to edit and refine the route directly—no need to screen-share or export files. It’s all live, all together.

Invite Route Collaborators

  • Real-Time Updates – Every change is instantly saved and visible to all collaborators. See updates as they happen, without hitting refresh.

  • On-Route Communication – Drop comments or suggestions right onto the map. Want to discuss a turn or rest stop? Just leave a note.

Route Edit Notes

  • Version History – Accidentally deleted that perfect gravel segment? No stress—you can easily roll back to a previous version.

Does It Matter?

Cycling is more fun when it’s shared. And so is the planning. Suppose everyone in the group believes they’ve contributed to the final route. In that case, there’s more buy-in to the common purpose and less of a begrudging ‘told you so’ when the tarmac runs out and the unexpected gravel begins.

We love planning and riding with friends—but juggling texts, screenshots, and scattered feedback was never ideal. Collaborative Route Planning changes that. It brings everything into one place, so anyone can plan smarter, faster, and enjoy better rides, together. [K Prentice, Ride with GPS]
