Garmin to add store cards, passes and ID into its ecosystem?

Garmin Fenix 7 GarminPayGarmin to add store cards, passes and ID into its ecosystem?

Billy at the Garmin Rumours site today reported on some intel I received last week, essentially, Garmin is about to start marketing “Garmin Wallet”.

A Rebranded Garmin PAY?

A: No

Contrary to what was reported in a few other places, I highly doubt Garmin will rebrand its Garmin PAY payment mechanism. However, it IS using the Garmin WALLET branding.

More Credit Cards In PAY?

A: Nope

Garmin PAY already accepts 10 credit/debit cards, so the new name does not refer to the ability to add more payment mechanisms.

So what is happening

Garmin’s new WALLET will include PAY as part of it. The new wallet will include non-payment cards, ID and passes. Similar to how Apple Wallet and Apple PAY work together.

It’s impossible for Garmin to add driving licence, passport, and national ID details, and even if or when they can, it will likely be a USA-only service initially.

Instead, Garmin will be adding store cards, tickets and the like. Perhaps the initial service might include race-related sign-up information? This would tie in with the company’s recent purchase of a Race Timing Company and its decision to proceed with a US, Garmin-branded marathon series.

Take Out

PAY is not going away, and Garmin does not have the critical mass to store your digital national ID. Garmi Wallet is coming though.

  1. The current Garmin pay is so limited I barely use it because there are very few cards that it accepts in the UK you would expect Visa or MasterCard as standard but in Garmins case it’s only from very specific banks

      1. I’m on one of those in-betweens (vimpay, Germany) where I have to keep a separate balance and I actually find it super helpful that all those tiny charges I do with my watch don’t show up on my regular credit card bill. Would make occasionally reviewing the credit card bill so much more a chore than it already is! If my bank started to super Garmin pay directly, I would not switch.

  2. In china, its very easy to use garmin pay and garmin wallet.
For public transportation ,city subway and city bus,you can use watch tap to pay in different cities ,even your watch disconnect with your phone, and you no need switch cities,it is more easy and convenient than mobile phone .
Other two mian pay is alipay and wechat pay . Those are two largest and only payment method in china,
I don’t know the situation in other countries, but i hope everyone can have one garmin watch with Garmin pay

  3. I know you can use curve but I do not want a work round, just want to use my own card as it is. What is the use of having Garmin pay if very limited cards can use it.
