Garmin Adds Multi-Device Support for inReach Satellite Communicators.
Garmin has rolled out a much-needed update to its inReach satellite communication ecosystem, following hints a few months ago that this was coming. That’s right, full multi-device support on a single consumer account. This change eliminates the restriction that activating an inReach service on one device would automatically deactivate it on another.
This update makes life easier for Garmin customers who own multiple inReach-capable devices, such as the latest inReach Mini 3 Plus series and a satellite-enabled Fenix 8 Pro.
What the Update Changes
Previously, owners with multiple inReach devices had to choose which to keep active on their plan at any given time, or manage multiple separate Garmin accounts. Updates to the Garmin ecosystems and particularly the Garmin Messenger app updates now allow:
- Multiple Active Devices activated on one account.
- Seamless Switching without forced deactivation.
- Consolidated Management: All active inReach devices plus your plan(s) is managed centrally via the Garmin Messenger app (or the Garmin Explore website)
What’s NOT Changed: Separate Subscriptions
While the multi-device support is fully implemented, there is an unwelcome detail when it comes to billing:
Each active inReach-capable device needs its own separate subscription plan and activation fee. If you want both your Fēnix 8 Pro and an inReach Mini 3 to be active at all times, you must pay for two individual subscriptions.
Garmin had previously indicated it was exploring a multi-device subscription, but for now, the one-subscription-per-device rule remains in place.
Key Affected Devices and Additional Improvements
This update is most relevant for those who recently invested in Fenix 8 Pro, but other compatible setups include :
- Fenix 8 Pro + inReach Mini 2 / Mini 3
- inReach Messenger+ + inReach Mini 3 Plus
- Montana 700i + Fēnix 8 Pro
Other Ecosystem Changes
Alongside multi-device support, dcrainmaker also reports that Garmin rolled out updates to its location-sharing features:
- LiveTrack for inReach: inReach devices can now use Garmin LiveTrack for position sharing, in addition to MapShare.
- Custom URLs: Custom LiveTrack URLs no longer require an additional Garmin Connect+ subscription if you have an active inReach or Outdoor Maps+ plan.
