Garmin PAY scope and coverage is expanded

Garmin Fenix 7 GarminPayGarmin PAY scope and coverage is expanded

Garmin Pay is a contactless payment solution designed for Garmin wearable devices. It allows users to make purchases directly from their Garmin devices without carrying a physical wallet or smartphone. Historically it has only been available on watches but that will very soon change to include bike computers, starting with Edge 1050. Garmin Pay works with a variety of banks and credit card providers with significant differences in coverage from country to country. (How to Guide: use Garmin PAY with almost ANY bank – here)

Today’s brief news is about the service’s expansion to cover more providers.

Garmin PAY is about to be expanded to cover AliPay and T-money. You might have heard of the former but probably not the latter

  • AliPay is a large digital payment platform mostly used in China. As a payments system, it is similar in scope to PayPal.
  • Popular in Korea, T-money is a travel card that can be topped up and used on multiple modes of transport.

That’s it. Great news for China and Korea. Wouldn’t it be nice if Garmin directly supported PayPal? ie not via a PayPal Mastercard! and thus giving it near-global coverage to huge numbers of people in one fell swoop.

    1. There is also a Paypal Mastercard in the list of Garmin’s pay accepted cards but could be limited to certain countries.

  1. There’s only 1 bank in my country that supports Garmin Pay and I’m not going to switch bank or open another account just to use that. Sure it would be nice to be able to pay for bus and train rides, and other stuff if Garmin takes a proactive approach to engage more banks to include their services, but for now I’ll go with my mobile phone.

    1. I did change my bank to get Garmin Pay and I didn’t regret it. I moved from Barclays to Starling. The move was easy and I don’t just have Garmin Pay but also a much better banking experience overall. I recommend everybody should try moving bank occassionally – that’s the only way they’ll learn to serve customers.

  2. It’s totally not supported by any bank in Malaysia. That’s why I am going buy Samsung Watch 7 next month to use Samsung Pay which is widely supported here.

    1. I us Starling for Garmin Pay as my current bank account doesn’t support it either. Starling is the only account I know where you don’t have to have wages/bills etc tied to it. I just transfer some money across monthly, just so Garmin Pay is available for me

  3. I’d love to use Garmin pay from my watch but my account won’t accept the device/app and I really don’t want to keep putting things on the B/C (especially if less than £5).
Please get more UK bank’s and building societies interested – like Apple\samsung pay etc.
