About This Section
The navigation features in this section work from route data. ClimbPro reads the elevation in a loaded course to show how much of each climb remains, and on recent Edge cycling computers it can also detect climbs on the road ahead without a course. Courses and Up Ahead follow a planned route and show the points still to come on it, while Round-Trip Course builds a loop of a chosen distance from the device’s onboard maps. TracBack and Back to Start use the track recorded during the activity to guide the athlete back the way they came.
The safety features work differently, because they depend on a data connection rather than on maps. Assistance sends the athlete’s name, a LiveTrack link and their GPS location to their emergency contacts. Incident Detection starts the same request automatically when the device detects an incident during an outdoor walk, run, hike or bike activity. Both need a paired phone with mobile data, unless the watch has its own LTE or inReach connection.
Assistance does not contact the emergency services, and Garmin describes it as a supplemental feature that should not be relied on as the main way to get help. Assistance Plus goes further. It is available only on LTE watches with an active subscription, in supported countries, and it alerts Garmin’s International Emergency Response Coordination Center (IERCC), whose staff can contact the emergency services on the athlete’s behalf.
LiveTrack is the link between the two groups. It shares an athlete’s position in real time with chosen contacts during an activity, and it is the same location link that Assistance and Incident Detection send when they are triggered.
