Expert opinion

Who it suits: Pilots and frequent flyers who want Garmin’s most connected aviation watch, with messaging and SOS that work without a phone.

The D2 Mach 2 Pro keeps everything in the D2 Mach 2, including the moving map with NEXRAD, airport data, HSI, METARs and TAFs, personal minimums and Garmin Pilot flight plans. Its big addition is built-in inReach LTE and satellite, so you can call, message, share LiveTrack, check in and trigger an interactive SOS on the ground without your phone.

Those features need an inReach subscription, depend on regional coverage and are not for use in flight. Battery lasts up to 24 days as a smartwatch and 78 hours of GPS, and the 40-metre dive mode, flashlight and full training tools come along too. It suits pilots who spend time away from mobile coverage; otherwise the D2 Mach 2 offers the same flying tools for less.
