Expert opinion
The Instinct E is Garmin’s entry point to the Instinct 3 generation, positioned below the Instinct 3 Solar and AMOLED models. At launch in January 2025, it drew immediate criticism: it was priced above discounted Instinct 2 stock while omitting features the Instinct 2 carried. The absence of a flashlight is the most tangible hardware omission among the current Instinct range.
The E offers Garmin’s core outdoor feature set (VO2 Max, Body Battery, HRV Status, ABC sensors and advanced sleep monitoring) in the only current Instinct size available at 40 mm. It supports three satellite systems (GPS, GLONASS and Galileo) but lacks the multi-band dual-frequency GNSS with SatIQ technology found on the Instinct 3. Training Status, Training Load and Multisport mode are also absent. As Instinct 2 inventory cleared and the earlier model went out of production, the value comparison shifted in the E’s favour.
What’s new versus the Instinct 2
Hardware
The Instinct E shares the Instinct 2’s fibre-reinforced polymer construction and design language. The metal-reinforced bezel introduced on the Instinct 3 is not present; the bezel is fibre-reinforced polymer throughout. The flashlight, made standard across all Instinct 3 models, is also absent.
Software
New on the Instinct E relative to the Instinct 2:
- Breathing Variations: monitoring of shifts in sleep breathing patterns
- Nap Detection
- HRV Status as a dedicated daily metric with trend tracking
- Morning Report: sleep, HRV and calendar overview on waking
- Lifestyle Logging: caffeine and alcohol intake tracking, with reporting in Garmin Connect
- Daily Suggested Workouts for running and cycling, adapting after each completed activity
Not carried over from the Instinct 2:
- Training Status
- Training Load
- Multisport and Triathlon activity modes
- Five-satellite GNSS: the Instinct E supports GPS, GLONASS and Galileo only, against the Instinct 2’s five-system Airoha chipset
