Expert opinion
The Oura Ring 5 is comfortable enough for continuous wear, including overnight, with its slimmer design reducing bulk during everyday activities. Sleep duration and overnight heart rate readings have closely matched reference devices, including a sleep monitoring system and a chest strap. However, extended testing found little measurable improvement in readings over the previous generation, making claims of greater accuracy difficult to verify. Battery life lasted six to nine days in real use. The app translates sleep, readiness, activity and physiological trends into accessible daily insights, while a £5.99 monthly subscription unlocks detailed analysis. Illness alerts can flag changes in the body, although they may arrive after symptoms begin. Its notable achievement is combining unobtrusive continuous monitoring with a mature health analysis platform in a substantially smaller design.
For athletes and health-conscious users, the Ring 5 excels at tracking sleep, monitoring recovery trends and highlighting changes in resting physiology over time. Its discreet design makes consistent overnight data collection easier, helping users recognise patterns that occasional measurements miss. However, workout heart rate, activity detection and exercise performance analysis remain less dependable than dedicated sports watches and chest straps, particularly during intense exercise. It also lacks the detailed real-time performance feedback needed for structured training. Its measurements provide useful context for recovery and general wellbeing, but cannot diagnose illness or reliably predict it.
