Expert opinion

The Suunto Run 2 is a genuine upgrade over the Suunto Run, built around the latest-generation internal components (OHR, GNSS, display) and an option for offline maps.

The case format, 1.32-inch AMOLED display, barometric altimeter and SpO2 sensor all carry over from the Run, with a display now three times brighter. Over the Run, it adds a 12-channel optical heart rate sensor and a new-generation dual-band GNSS chipset. The 64GB model also includes free worldwide offline maps; the 4GB model does not. Training features include ZoneSense’s real-time HRV-based intensity adjustment, EnergySense live effort tracking, Marathon Time finish prediction, Ghost Runner pacing, structured training plans and progress tracking against VO2 max, fitness age and lactate threshold, plus the SuuntoPlus app store for further add-ons. Battery capacity rises 29%, giving up to 24 hours in performance GPS mode against the Run’s 20, and around 10 days of daily use. Against the Forerunner 170, it wins on maps but loses on contactless payments, Spotify support, and a wider range of training features. It has no LTE/5G cellular capability.

Looking at alternatives to the Run 2?

  • Predecessor: Suunto Run, cheaper but with no maps and a weaker heart rate sensor.
  • Also consider: the Garmin Forerunner 170 for a wider range of training features and Garmin Pay, or the Suunto Race S for maps on every SKU.
