Running with Garmin’s own power instead of a Stryd? See how to set up Garmin running power zones, which read higher than Stryd’s. The running power zone spreadsheet covers the other zone systems too.
What to do with this number
- Read the Stryd review and the Stryd specs database.
- Set heart rate zones too: heart rate zones.
- Pair power with paces from the VDOT calculator.
- Choose a watch that reads power: best running watch.
- Train it with the 5k training plan.
- Learn how your watch estimates effort: Garmin features.
Quick answers
What is critical power?
Critical power is the highest power you can sustain for roughly half an hour to an hour, and it sets the boundary between sustainable and unsustainable effort. Zones are percentages of it.
Which power zone system should I use?
Use the one your power meter, app or coach already uses so your numbers match. Stryd has five zones, Palladino ten and Vance seven.
How do I find my critical power?
Stryd and some apps estimate it from your runs. With another system, use the critical power value your platform reports from recent hard efforts.
Why use power instead of pace?
Power responds instantly to hills and wind, while pace does not. It lets you hold the right effort on a climb or into a headwind.
Why use power instead of heart rate?
Heart rate lags behind effort by a minute or more and drifts with heat, while power responds at once. The two work well together.
Are power numbers the same on every device?
No. Each brand calculates running power in its own way, so zones from one device do not transfer to another. Retest after switching.
