Firstbeat Sports Garmin Integration: Sleep Data for Teams

Firstbeat Sports Adds Garmin Sleep Data Integration

Announced: February 5, 2026

Firstbeat Sports now pulls sleep data from Garmin watches. If you’re a professional sports team using Firstbeat’s monitoring platform, your athletes’ overnight recovery metrics from Garmin devices now sync automatically to the system.

Several NBA, NFL, NHL, MLS, and MLB elite teams already use Firstbeat for training load monitoring.

Note: The Firstbeat Sports platform remains independent of Garmin, which acquired Firstbeat’s sports analytics division in 2020. It doesn’t affect individual athletes or recreational Garmin customers.

What Gets Synced

Teams’ athletes who wear Garmin watches overnight are affected, and the following metrics are now synced to Firstbeat Sports for the first time:

  • Sleep duration
  • Sleep score
  • Resting heart rate
  • Average overnight HRV
  • Peak 5-minute overnight HRV

Which metrics you get depends on the Garmin model. Most modern Garmin watches with sleep tracking work here.

What difference does this make?

Firstbeat already tracks training load from sessions—heart rate variability during activity indicates training stress and recovery demands. But it doesn’t tell coaches what happened overnight to their athletes.

Now you can see whether poor training performance is linked to inadequate sleep, elevated resting heart rate, or suppressed HRV.

For example, an athlete had a high training load yesterday, slept 5 hours with a poor Garmin Sleep Score, and woke with an elevated resting HR and low HRV. That’s objective data to reduce today’s training volume. This level of detail is used every day by coaches. Some pro team athletes I know have their own coaches who monitor their load minute by minute and pull them off the training field once a certain level is reached. This new data helps adjust the day’s training target.

Useful for:

  • Adjusting daily training loads based on actual recovery, not just what the plan says
  • Catching accumulated fatigue before it becomes a problem
  • Return-to-play decisions with more context
  • Quantifying how travel and competition schedules affect recovery

Setup

You need a Firstbeat Sports subscription, and your athletes need a compatible Garmin device. Enable Garmin Connect integration in Firstbeat Sports. Athletes authorise data sharing. Sorted.

After that, the data syncs automatically. Each morning, overnight metrics appear alongside yesterday’s training data.

If you don’t use Firstbeat Sports, this announcement doesn’t affect you.

The Bottom Line

This is a useful, free new feature for teams using Firstbeat Sports with athletes wearing Garmin watches. Sleep quality matters for recovery, and integrating it with training load data helps coaches make better decisions about daily training adjustments.
