Expert opinion

Who it suits: Beginner and recreational scuba divers, dive schools, and anyone who wants a dependable backup computer with a big, clear display and a long battery.

The Descent X10 keeps to the essentials. It covers single-gas scuba, apnea and gauge diving with air and nitrox, runs the same Bühlmann ZHL-16c model with gradient factors as the dearer Descents, and lets you set conservatism, safety stops and deep stops to suit. NDL Aware shows how a change of depth will affect your remaining no-deco time, and audible and vibration alerts cover ascent rate, PO2 and deco. The Garmin Dive app syncs your logs and marks entry and exit points from your phone, and rental mode lets a dive centre reset the computer between customers. The app can also simulate a full dive, so you can practise a scenario before getting in the water.

The 2.1-inch monochrome MIP screen uses large data fields and an always-on backlight, so it is easy to read at depth. The leakproof inductive buttons have no openings to flood, and the battery lasts up to 50 hours of diving, far longer than the X30 or X50i. What you give up is colour, built-in GPS, trimix, air integration and SubWave messaging. For a first dive computer, or a backup at this price, those are fair trades.
