Expert opinion

The Garmin Edge 850 combines the display and processing power of the larger Edge 1050 with a more compact case and the addition of both touchscreen and physical button controls. Navigation, mapping, training metrics, ClimbPro, voice prompts, Garmin Pay, and integration with power meters, radar, and smart trainers all carry over from the 1050 in a smaller footprint.

Battery life is the trade-off. The brighter transmissive display cuts runtime noticeably below the Edge 840’s, and riders covering ultra-endurance distances may find the Edge 1040 a better fit on that measure alone.
