Garmin’s Q3 2026 Update Adds Voice Control, Fall Detection and Six More Features
Garmin’s Q3 2026 update is free and now rolling out across existing smartwatches and Edge cycling computers, according to Garmin’s own Q3 2026 feature update document. It follows gear tracking and Course Planner in the Q1 2026 update and golf tag support with Bosch eBike compatibility in the Q2 2026 update.
Hands-free voice control activates with “OK, Garmin,” letting an owner start a timer or an activity without touching the screen, or reach a paired phone’s voice assistant by saying “phone assistant.” Beta 18.12 previewed this in July across the Forerunner 970, Forerunner 570, Venu X1, Venu 4 and vivoactive 6, ahead of this quarter’s wider rollout.
Fall detection sends a message with the owner’s live location to preset contacts when the device detects a fall, under Garmin’s published incident detection requirements. Owners can run it all day or limit it to chosen activities. Garmin remains under active ITC investigation over the patent behind this exact feature.
Quick Workout builds a running session from two inputs: desired time and intensity. No structured plan needs to be written or selected first.
New Garmin Run Coach plans add lower-volume and run-walk formats that adjust daily against recovery and health metrics. This extends Run Coach to owners training around injury, low mileage or limited time.
Dive setup sharing syncs settings between compatible dive computers, such as the D2 Mach 2 Pro, over Garmin Share. A dive buddy or a backup computer picks up the same configuration without re-entering it by hand.
XC Ski Indoor adds an activity profile for indoor ski sessions, with support for compatible indoor ski trainers.
Enduro ride profile enhancements let compatible Edge computers detect climbs and descents automatically, without a lap-button press, logging ascent and descent per climb, per descent and for the full ride.
Live Activity for outdoor workouts requires a Garmin Connect+ subscription, so it reaches only owners on that plan.

Which devices get the most features
Compatibility is based on total feature count rather than a uniform list. Garmin’s document marks each dot as either an existing or a new feature without distinguishing which is which in the flattened table, so the counts below cover total applicable features out of eight, not new additions specifically. The Fenix 8, Fenix 8 Pro, Tactix 8, Quatix 8, Quatix 8 Pro, D2 Mach 2 and D2 Mach 2 Pro group shows six of the eight features, level with the Venu 4. The Venu X1, D2 Air X15 and Forerunner 570/970 show five each. The Forerunner 70, Forerunner 170, Forerunner 170 Music, vivoactive 6, Fenix E and Enduro 3 show four each. The Edge MTB, 550, 850 and 1050 computers and the Instinct E, Instinct 3 and Instinct 3 Crossover AMOLED show one each.
Relatively new devices still missing out
The Venu 3, vivoactive 5, Forerunner 265, Forerunner 965 and the entire Fenix 7 range remain absent from the Q3 table, the same absence carried over from Q2. Several of these watches are under two years old and none of them were cheap when new. Garmin has not stated whether any will receive Q3 features in a later cycle or miss out entirely.
The exception: Fenix 9 features moving backwards
Separately from the quarterly rollout, Garmin has confirmed that most new Fenix 9 software features will pass to existing Garmin watches, including the Fenix 8 series, Enduro 3, Tactix 8, the Forerunner 970 and 570, Fenix E and the Venu X1 series. Garmin has not broken its pattern of keeping a new flagship’s software exclusive for over fifteen years before now: Fenix 6 owners never received Fenix 7 features, and Fenix 7 owners never received Fenix 8 features. A Fenix 8 owner now picks up Garmin Epic, the indoor rowing overhaul, Stamina zones and the rucking update without buying a new watch. Four items stay exclusive to the Fenix 9: Dynamic Battery mode naming, automatic SatIQ multi-band handling, three mapping improvements built around the Fenix 9’s extra memory, and the ArcheryX activity profile.
The Forerunner 965, Instinct 3 series and Fenix 6/7 ranges get none of this backport, the same watches already absent from the Q3 quarterly update above.

DCR mentioned the Indoor XC Ski activity in one of his F9 reviews. You can finally pair the C2 Ski Erg with your watch, just like the Bike, Row and Strength Erg. Could be interesting for the Hyrox crowd. I am still surprised that Garmin is not jumping on Hyrox anyway…instead we got Pickle Ball….
