Expert opinion

The Watch 6 keeps the Watch 5’s X-TAP sensor, now a 12-channel PPG sensor paired with a pressure sensor Huawei states is twice as responsive as the Watch 5’s, though Huawei’s own comparison is against the Watch 5 specifically and independent verification isn’t available. Health Glance activates with a 3-second press-and-hold on X-TAP, returning a 14-metric report across four bodily systems within 60 seconds, evaluating results for three opt-in research studies run through the HUAWEI Research app: coronary heart disease, diabetes risk, and hypertension risk. These are studies you join separately, not passive background features, and Huawei is explicit that none of them are intended for diagnosis or treatment.

Pulse Wave Arrhythmia Analysis is confirmed as a real feature, named directly in Huawei’s own battery test conditions. Water resistance is unchanged from the Watch 5: 5 ATM, IP69, and a 40-metre freedive rating under the EN13319 standard, the same rating class as Huawei’s outdoor-focused GT line rather than a typical smartwatch’s basic splash resistance.

Case material differs by size and is a genuine step down from the Watch 5’s premium tiers: the 42mm uses an aluminium alloy front, the 46mm stainless steel, both with a polymer composite rear rather than the Watch 5’s titanium or 316L/904L stainless steel builds. GNSS is fully specified: GPS with L1 and L5 dual-band, GLONASS, BeiDou tri-band, Galileo dual-band, and QZSS dual-band, alongside NearLink, Huawei’s proprietary short-range wireless standard, and dual-band 2.4GHz plus 5GHz WLAN.

AI-powered workout analysis is a genuinely new capability, but Huawei states directly that it does not cover skiing, snowboarding, golf, or diving, the same sports the watch’s own hardware is built to track. Two features remain OTA-pending rather than live at launch: Gesture Magic, wrist gestures for silencing calls and controlling the watch, and a Safety Check feature sharing location and physical status with designated contacts.

What’s new versus the Watch 5

Hardware

  • Case material moves to aluminium alloy (42mm) or stainless steel (46mm) front with a polymer composite rear, a step down from the Watch 5’s titanium or 316L/904L stainless steel builds
  • Colours reduce to White, Gold and Black on the 42mm and Black and Blue on the 46mm, from the Watch 5’s eight colours split across two case sizes
  • Peak brightness rises to 3,500 nits, from the Watch 5’s 3,000
  • NearLink connectivity and dual-band 2.4GHz/5GHz WLAN are added

Software

  • X-TAP moves to a 12-channel PPG sensor, which Huawei states doubles responsiveness versus the Watch 5
  • Health Glance is confirmed at 14 metrics across four bodily systems, up from an unstated count on the Watch 5’s specification page
  • Coronary heart disease, diabetes risk, and hypertension risk studies are added as opt-in programmes via the HUAWEI Research app. None of these three appear on the Watch 5’s specification page
  • Pulse Wave Arrhythmia Analysis is confirmed, named directly in Huawei’s battery test conditions
  • Gesture Magic and Safety Check are both added, though pending OTA release at launch rather than live immediately

The 46mm reaches 4.5 days typical use in Standard mode (3 days with always-on display), rising to 7 days typical use in Battery saver mode (11 days light use, 4.5 days with always-on display).
