Expert opinion
The Huawei Watch Fit 5 Pro is the strongest case yet for a rectangular sports watch under £300, built on a heart rate sensor that ranks among the best tested on this site and a GPS antenna that trails Huawei’s own GT Runner 2 by a wide margin. It looks the part of an Apple Watch Ultra 3 at roughly a third of the price, and across four weeks of running, cycling and swimming the trade-off held: better sensors than the price suggests, weaker GPS than the looks suggest.
Heart rate tracking from the new 6-LED, 6-PD module matched reference chest straps within one to two per cent across running, cycling and walking, rare enough on a wrist sensor to justify training by it without a strap. GPS accuracy was the clear weak point, scoring 63 per cent on the site’s standard ten-mile test against the GT Runner 2’s 90 per cent, and the upgraded Sunflower antenna does not replicate the Runner 2’s dielectric bezel design. Sleep tracking sat within 20 minutes of the Apple Watch Ultra 3 across ten paired nights, and virtual cycling power carried a consistent ten per cent error, useful only as a relative effort indicator. The Huawei Health app remains cluttered for a Western audience, and AppGallery restrictions blocked the marketed URUNN coaching app on the iPhone unit tested.
What’s new versus the Fit 4 Pro
Hardware
- Display upgraded to a 1.92-inch LTPO AMOLED from the Fit 4 Pro’s 1.82-inch AMOLED, retaining 480 x 408 resolution and 3,000 nits, with an 83 per cent screen-to-body ratio and 1.8mm bezels on all four sides
- Case grows marginally to 44.5 x 40.8 x 9.5mm from 44.5 x 40.0 x 9.3mm, weight unchanged at 30.4g. The White Pro edition adds aerospace-grade nanoceramic metal, a claimed 130 per cent increase in surface hardness
- Battery capacity rises to 471mAh from 400mAh, an 18 per cent capacity uplift and 14 per cent density uplift from a higher-silicon battery chemistry
- New 6-LED, 6-PD optical heart rate module
- New high-range IMU sensor, supporting fall detection up to 32g
Software
- Trail-running mode adds a new headline battery figure of 25 hours with GPS active; typical (7 days) and light-use (10 days) figures are unchanged from the Fit 4 Pro
- Upgraded Sunflower GNSS antenna and positioning algorithm, retaining L1/L5 dual-frequency reception across multiple constellations
- Sleep staging upgraded to clinical N1/N2/N3 labels, with a new Nap mode
- Sleep Breathing Awareness now available outside China for non-medical use
- Pulse wave arrhythmia analysis, CE-certified in Europe on both Fit 5 and Fit 5 Pro. PPG-based atrial fibrillation detection added
- Curve Pay NFC contactless payments across the UK and most of the EEA from May 2026
- Cycling gains Virtual Cycling Power, Virtual Cadence, real-time gradient with 3D speed and distance, FTP, third-party accessory pairing, and a phone-as-bike-computer mode with route import
- Running gains on-watch running power, a Single Running Ability Index, grade-adjusted pace, and trail-running checkpoint and destination markers, Pro only
- New golf mode on the Pro: over 17,000 course maps, Driving Range mode, Course mode, custom distance measurement, an auto-rotating green view, custom flagstick, Live Scorecard and Competition mode
