Suunto&#8217;s guidance is to reset the reference regularly from a topographic map or a local sea-level pressure reading.

The storm alarm triggers on a rapid barometric pressure drop, historically 4 hPa or more over 3 hours on the original Core. It works only when the watch is in barometer profile. On automatic profile, the watch switches to altimeter mode when moving, and the storm alarm drops out with it. In first-week testing on the Core 2, the alarm fired at the end of a bike ride when the local Meteo pressure record showed the atmosphere had been flat all day, which is consistent with an artefact of the automatic profile switching from altimeter back to barometer rather than a real storm.
