Whoop and Withings Link Body Composition – What This Means For Whoop 5

Whoop band users can now link the Whoop app to Apple Health or Withings to track muscle mass, body fat, and other body composition metrics. Does this tell us anything about Whoop 5?

Integration Details

I use a Garmin S2 Smart Scale which transfers body composition data to the Garmin Connect app. Whichever source app you use ensure it has permission to write the body comp information to Apple Health (or Google for Android). Make a reading and check it is added in the “All Recorded Data ” section.

Then you need to go into the Whoop app and give it access to the same data. You do this via the INTEGRATIONS>Apple Health menu

How to see the Body Composition Metrics in Whoop

In the Whoop app go to Home> Overview> Customise and add Body Fat Percentage or any other metric. Your Garmin/Withings data should now update quickly on your Whoop app after every reading.

Why?

You will hopefully be targeting a better-than-average Lean Body Mass for your age and sex.

Whilst a calorie deficit in your diet is guaranteed to make you lose weight, if you don’t undertake sufficient strength exercise and don’t consume sufficient protein you may find that your weight loss includes more muscle loss than you desire.

What Does This Mean For Whoop 5?

There are no rumours about Whoop 5 being released this year, but a release in September/October would be my expectation based on Whoop’s past schedules.

Whoop’s latest move to include more Wellness data from other sources indicates the company aims to provide a more holistic app with insights based on data it is unlikely to capture by itself.

In addition to an improved optical HR sensor, Whoop might include sensing capabilities for EDA/GSR data or even the ability to support contactless payments via Curve.
