Strava Insights into London Marathon Training
This year’s London Marathon falls on April 27th; with two weeks to go, your weekly mileage will likely drop to 18.6 miles. That’s some joyous yet anxious respite for you ahead of the big day. The final week will be easier still.
Strava has released data from last year’s finishers when over 60% of the 54,000 participants uploaded their race day data. Here’s what the average person’s training was like from last year.
Putting in the work:
- Four months out: The median weekly distance was 31km (19.3 mi), with the average long run 10km (6.2 mi).
- One month out: Weekly mileage averaged 45km (28 mi), with the most common long run distance at 32km (20 mi).
- Taper time: Two weeks before race day, weekly mileage dropped to 30km (18.6 mi).
- Race week: Most runners covered 12km (8 mi) in easy running before the big day.
