Updated: 23 Feb 2026
Expensive. Excellent. Silent.
Great sleep for both of you. Trustworthy stats.
Get up and running within 30 minutes, and it will automate temperatures to improve your sleep for the rest of the year. You can have as little or as much control and interaction as you want. The sleep stats are instructive at a glance but can be tapped through for lots of details, charts and trends.
Check which of you snore and the effect of Pod 5 Ultra on reducing those sleep disturbances.
Final Verdict: The Eight Sleep Pod 5 is an excellent investment for couples and athletes who prioritise active temperature control to boost deep sleep. The required Autopilot subscription is justified by the precise, real-time adjustments, which non-wearables cannot match. Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is a high barrier to entry, but the Pod 5 delivers the most reliable physiological readings combined with proven environmental benefits.

What Sets EightSleep Apart
These core, shared features are what most people will want.
- Automatic cooling and heating on each side of the bed let partners set individual temperature preferences, and EightSleep adjusts them as your sleep stages progress through the night.
- Sleep and health tracking without a wearable, including tracking sleep stages, heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), snoring, and breathing rate. The sleep stage tracking and heart rate/HRV measurements are accurate, making this a reference-grade tracker.
- Vibration and thermal alarms. The thermal alarm heats the bed to help you wake up. The Ultra model also adds an audible alarm.
Feature Differences
There are three versions of the Pod 5 available. Most people get the CORE option, which goes around their existing mattress.
- Pod 5 Core: This base model includes the mattress cover and the Hub.
- Key Features: Essential temperature control with cooling and heating on each side of the bed, sleep and health tracking, and vibration and thermal alarms.
- Pricing: In the US, the full-size starts at $2,849, about $400 more than the Pod 4 counterpart due to tariffs. In the EU/UK, a UK Double size starts at £2,649 (on offer from £2,749). A large double size in the EU begins at €3,049 (on offer from €3,149).
- Pod 5 Plus: This version builds upon the Core model by adding a temperature-regulated blanket.
- Key Features: Includes the Cover, Hub, and Blanket. It offers immersive temperature control with 2x cooling and heating capacity, thanks to the blanket syncing with the cover, sleep and health tracking, and vibration and thermal alarms. The blanket’s temperature matches the mattress surface, providing uniform warmth around the body. This effectively doubles the heating and cooling efficiency.
- Pricing: In the US, adding the blanket increases the price to $4,099. In the EU/UK, a UK Double size starts at £3,449 (on offer from £3,599).
- Pod 5 Ultra: This is the most expensive and advanced version, including the Cover, Hub, Blanket, and an adjustable Base.
- Key Features: Provides Immersive temperature control, elevation, and sound. It includes all features of the Plus model, plus the adjustable base that offers back pressure relief with zero-gravity elevation, snoring mitigation by slightly raising the head of the bed, and integrated surround-sound speakers for playing soundscapes, guided meditation, or audio alarms. The base fits within your existing bed frame or can be used as a standalone frame with an optional Leg Kit. The adjustable base and built-in speakers are new additions to the Pod 5 Ultra compared to the Pod 4 Ultra.
- Pricing: The complete Pod 5 Ultra setup in the US starts from $6,099 for a queen size to $6,300 for a king or Cali king. In the EU/UK, prices start at €6,599 for the large double and go up to €6,699 for the Emperor. Due to the added blanket, the Pod 5 Ultra is significantly more expensive than the equivalent Pod 4 Ultra in the EU.
Pod 5 vs. Competitors: Active Control vs. Wearables
There are no direct competitors to Eight Sleep.
The Eight Sleep Pod 5 fundamentally lacks a direct competitor because no other product combines smart, active temperature regulation with integrated, passive tracking.
Simple heating solutions, such as electric blankets, are not true alternatives. They offer only basic heating, lack cooling, and cannot provide the individualised, dual-zone temperature changes that automatically adapt to two people’s sleep needs throughout the night.
The QS EMfit is the only other quality passive tracker. While accurate, its key deficiencies include the lack of temperature control and a user interface that is significantly less functional and user-friendly than the Eight Sleep app.
Wearable trackers, such as the Oura Ring and WHOOP MG, offer a clear trade-off: they provide continuous 24/7 wellness insights (Strain, Activity, Recovery) that extend beyond the bed. However, they do not control the sleep environment. The Pod 5 excels in controlling the thermal environment, which actively and directly improves sleep quality—the foundation from which all the most meaningful physiological insights (like stable RHR and HRV) are derived.
| Feature | Eight Sleep Pod 5 (Active Control) | Oura Ring Gen 3 (Discreet Passive) | WHOOP MG (Medical-Grade Wearable) |
| Form Factor | Passive Bed Sensor (Cover/Hub) | Wearable (Ring) | Wearable (Wrist Band/AnyWear Apparel) |
| Temperature Control | Dynamic Dual-Zone Cooling/Heating (Active) | – | – |
| Key Biometrics | Sleep Stages, HRV, Resting HR, Snoring (Mitigation) | Sleep Stages, HRV, Resting HR, Body Temp Variation | Sleep Stages, HRV, Resting HR, ECG (on-demand), Blood Pressure Insights |
| Subscription Value | Required for AI Autopilot (active temperature adjustment) | Required for Advanced Insights and Health Trends | Required for All Analytics (Healthspan, ECG/Heart Screener, Blood Pressure) |
| Unique Selling Point | Active environmental manipulation (temperature) is proven to boost deep sleep. | Most discreet form factor and industry-leading HRV/Resting Physiology tracking. | Medical-grade ECG capabilities, 14+ day battery life, and AnyWear (off-wrist) flexibility. |
Eight Sleep Pod 5 – Is It Accurate?
The EightSleep Pod 5 is one of the most accurate consumer-grade sleep monitors on the market, and I use it as a reference test source when correlating HRV readings with those from other sleep devices. Our deep sleep test confirmed a correlation of r approx. -0.810 (strong negative) against WHOOP MG, establishing the Pod 5 as the most consistent and trustworthy tracker. Another reference-grade sleep monitor would be the Oura Ring. One advantage that a bed sensor has to deliver accurate readings is that your body position won’t impact the reading quality – lying on a wristwatch will affect accuracy.
Eightsleep detects Deep Sleep (N3), Light Sleep (N1/N2), and wakefulness well. However, every consumer-grade technology struggles to measure REM sleep accurately, and overall, no consumer-grade device will ever be more than 80% accurate compared to the industry gold standard, polysomnography.
EightSleep will utilise its overnight HRV averages to provide a market-leading assessment of your readiness and stress levels. It’s very good at this, and even though pro athletes use EightSleep, there is a slightly superior method, outlined here. However, its execution lacks the convenience of EightSleep’s passive data collection. EightSleep is WAY easier.
Deep Sleep Accuracy Test: Eight Sleep Best (60-85% Acc)
Correlation Summary:
- Oura vs. Whoop MG: r is approx. -0.161, n=30 (weak negative)
- Oura vs. Eight Sleep: r is approx. 0.145, n=30 (weak positive)
- Whoop MG vs. Eight Sleep: r is approx. -0.810, n=30 (strong negative)
Evaluation of the Best Tool to Measure Deep Sleep
- Oura: Weak correlations with Whoop MG and Eight Sleep, high variability (SD approx. 34.66), and a plausible but low mean (63.90 min) suggest inconsistency. Outliers (e.g., 15 min) may indicate underestimation or sensitivity issues.
- Whoop MG: Strong negative correlation with Eight Sleep (-0.810) and high mean (131.83 min) suggests potential overestimation, as values often exceed typical deep sleep ranges (60–120 min). Moderate variability (SD approx. 13.46) indicates reasonable consistency, but the negative correlation raises concerns about measurement alignment.
- Eight Sleep: Weak correlations with Oura but a strong negative correlation with Whoop MG. Its mean (77.87 min) and range (55–107 min) align well with expected deep sleep durations, and the lowest variability (SD approx. 10.03) suggests high consistency.
Best Tool: Eight Sleep is likely the best tool for measuring nightly deep sleep. Its measurements are within the expected range for adults, it has the lowest variability, and its consistency suggests reliability (30 nights, one person). Whoop MG’s high values and strong negative correlation with Eight Sleep suggest potential overestimation or methodological differences. Oura’s high variability and weak correlations indicate less reliability. Without a clinical standard, Eight Sleep’s alignment with expected deep sleep durations and stable measurements makes it the most trustworthy.
EightSleep App
In mid-2025, EightSleep simplified its app. It’s easier to have a glance or make a quick change beyond what is handled automatically. The new app doesn’t look as good and initially shows less detailed stats, likely in response to concerns about the previous version’s complexity.
Here is the active control view. There is one for each side of the bed. It shows the current and target temperatures, plus an overview of the temperature plan for the night, which will be adjusted in real time. You can manually override the temperature here or by tapping a small pad built into the mattress cover on each side of the bed.
The main stats screen summarises how good last night’s sleep was and what changes EightSleep made. In my case, the changes boosted Deep sleep by 5%. You can scroll down to see some of the key measures of your sleep, many of which can be tapped for more details. Here you can see that my main Health Check is good, with the 3 main aspects within their normal ranges. A late night led to a sleep pattern below my normal range.
Installation and maintenance
Compared to earlier pod versions, the current mattress cover can be easily put over your existing mattress in minutes. Priming the pod with water is easy (ideally, add some hydrogen peroxide to reduce mould over time). The tricky bits are:
- Ensure the pipe runs from the top of the mattress to the pod without excessively bending
- Ensure the bedside pod unit has space around it to vent air.
There is no regular maintenance per se. You may have to top up its small water tank once a year. The system can also be set to automatically prime itself each day, circulating water to prevent air bubbles. I used to have that running, but I have now turned it off.
What to watch out for: All generations of Eight Sleep require a separate bedside Hub connected to the mattress by small, flexible pipes. The Hub must have 2 inches of space to keep it cool, and the piping needs to be discreetly routed behind your bed to the centre of the headboard. Pod4 and Pod 5 utilise a significantly improved mattress cover that reduces installation time from several tens of minutes to just a couple of minutes – it’s easy and a one-time task.
EightSleep Pod 4 vs. Pod 5
The company still sells Pod 4 and is worth considering to save some money.
Despite what you might read elsewhere, the only real difference between the Ultra and the 4 is the blanket and the new speaker. Both have a reclining base option.
The earlier pod 3 has more fundamental differences. For example, it is much noisier, and the temperature cannot be controlled by tapping the side of the bed..
Pod 4 or 5 are the ones you want buy.
Pricing & The Subscription Cost
A monthly subscription (Autopilot plan) is required for the first 12 months to utilise the Pod’s intelligent features, sleep history, preferences, and environmental factors to automatically adjust temperature throughout the night. It also provides sleep and health reports and continuous software updates. The subscription covers two users.
- Pricing for Autopilot Plans: Standard is £17/month (£199 billed annually), Enhanced is £25/month (£299 billed annually), and Elite is £33/month (£399 billed annually).
- Warranty: A 2-year limited warranty is included with an active Standard membership. An extended warranty for up to 5 years is available with active Enhanced or Elite memberships.
Autopilot: Justifying the Subscription Cost
The monthly Autopilot plan subscription is a significant ongoing cost that covers tools that continuously adjust based on real-time biometric data (HRV, sleep stage) and environmental factors (room temperature, weather). This is the unique feature that passive wearable trackers cannot copy. Without the subscription features, Eight Sleep still provides analytics, but temperature control is manual.

55°F to 110°F (13°C to 44°C), or -10 to +10 on the relative scale.
How often do I need to refill the Pod 5 water tank?
Rarely. Approximately once per year for most owners.
Can I feel the tubes in the Pod 5 cover?
No. The Pod 5 has an improved foam layer. Tubes are undetectable during normal sleep.
What mattress sizes does Eight Sleep Pod 5 fit?
Full, Queen, King and California King. Fits mattresses 10 to 16 inches thick.
Does the Pod 5 hub emit heat into the room?
Yes, when cooling. The hub extracts heat from the mattress and releases it into the room.
How big is the Eight Sleep Pod 5 hub?
About the size of a small PC. Too tall to fit under most bed frames. Needs 2 inches clearance for ventilation.
Is the Eight Sleep Pod 5 good for hot flashes and menopause?
Yes. Features a hot flash mode activatable via physical button. Dual-zone means your partner is unaffected.
What is the difference between Pod 5 Core, Plus and Ultra?
Core: Cover and Hub (approximately $2,849 / £2,649). Plus: adds Blanket (approximately $4,099 / £3,599). Ultra: adds Adjustable Base with speakers (approximately $6,099 / £5,449). Check the current price in the review above as these change with sales.
Is the Eight Sleep subscription mandatory?
Yes for the first year. After that you can cancel but lose most smart features.
What is the total cost of Eight Sleep Pod 5 over 5 years?
Approximately $4,000 to $4,500 / £3,500 to £4,000 including Pod 5 Core and 5 years of subscription.
Does Eight Sleep Pod 5 track sleep accurately?
Yes. One of the most accurate consumer trackers for HRV and deep sleep. Like all consumer devices, REM tracking is less reliable.
Can two people have different temperatures on Pod 5?
Yes. True dual-zone control. Each side adjusts independently from 55°F to 110°F.
Does the Pod 5 snoring feature work?
Ultra model only. Detects snoring and gently elevates your head. Works for positional snoring but will not solve all sleep apnoea.
When does Eight Sleep have sales?
Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Memorial Day typically. Discounts usually $200 to $600 / £150 to £500 off.
What warranty does Eight Sleep Pod 5 have?
2 years standard. Extendable to 5 years with Enhanced or Elite subscription.
Does Eight Sleep actually improve sleep quality?
Temperature regulation is one of the most evidence-supported interventions for sleep quality. Cooling the bed by 1 to 3 degrees during the first half of the night and warming it slightly before waking aligns with circadian temperature patterns. After three years of continuous use, the measurable impact on deep sleep duration is modest (10 to 20 minutes per night in my data), but the subjective improvement in sleep onset speed is more noticeable.
Eight Sleep Pod 5 vs Pod 4: is the upgrade worth it?
The Pod 5 adds a thinner profile, faster temperature response and improved snoring detection. The core function (bed cooling and heating) is the same. If you already own a Pod 4 that works well, the upgrade is difficult to justify. If you are buying for the first time, the Pod 5 is the best model to choose.
The Ideal Buyer: Core, Plus, or Ultra?
Eight Sleep’s personalised temperature control is likely to increase anyone’s sleep quality. It’s suitable for singles and couples alike, as both sides are personalised and controlled independently.
- Pod 5 Core (Best Value): Ideal for individuals or couples who need precise, dual-zone temperature control. Additionally, suitable for menopausal hot flashes or for athletes who use cooling to enhance adaptation and monitor recovery with HRV tracking.
- Pod 5 Plus (Enhanced Cooling/Heating): If you live in a more extreme climate, the Plus model has twice the heating and cooling power to quickly achieve your ideal sleep temperature.
- Pod 5 Ultra (Sleep Apnea/Snoring Solution): Potentially life-changing for those impacted by chronic snoring or those managing mild obstructive sleep apnea symptoms. The adjustable base (included) is necessary to achieve head elevation for these benefits.
Take Out
Expensive. Excellent. Silent. I’ve used Eight Sleep for several years. It’s an expensive but excellent product. If optimising sleep through environmental control is your priority, the Pod 5 remains the category winner. The major positives are that you and your partner will likely get better sleep every night…
The major positives are that you and your partner will likely get better sleep every night, and each side of the bed adjusts separately based on your preferences and detected sleep stages. It’s a unique product that works. The sleep data it generates and uses throughout the night is accurate and on par with the best in the industry. If your partner snores, the 5 Plus model gently nudges them to change position, stopping the snoring without waking them or you.
I haven’t used the new blanket yet, and while I don’t doubt it works, I’m unconvinced it adds anything beyond the mattress’s already excellent temperature regulation. Similarly, the adjustable mattress is unnecessary unless you address one or both of your snoring issues.
Negatives include the subscription cost for the Autopilot features. Another negative, in my case, is that the pod doesn’t always handle ambient room temperature changes well as the seasons shift. That said, a quick tap-recalibration fixes the issue for a few months as it re-personalises your temperature profile.
I’ve reviewed a lot of fitness and wellness tech for over a decade, and Eight Sleep is one of my favourites (top 5!!)

Their prices were eyewatering before and they chose to add one higher subscription tier 😅
tariffs pause.. manufacturers “price is up cuz tariff” xD
Zero interest at these prices. Crazy!
It IS a really good product and there is a good market for it. The company is doing well.
Honest question, did you paid for it?
$eriously, for $6300 they give you a few sensors, a water mattress cover and blanket with temperature control, and a base that inclines if it detects a snoring sound? And then they charge you $500 a year to collect and sell your data?! They appear to spend heavily on influencers and ads, which is the common model for this kind of product.
they also sell to pro athletes and athlete teams.
its a good and unique product. it’s expensive and the subscription is expensive.
what is an optimal night’s sleep worth to you? to some people it’s worth a lot of money and they pay.
if you’ve ever had to share a bed with a snorer for extended periods it can literally ruin your life (no sleep…i’ve been there, you go crazy and cant function)
influencers and ads…how else should they sell the product? they could open a stall at the local market but i suspect the global reach would be limited 😉
influencers in one sense are just salary-free sales people (who you pay less commission to than you would do to an employed salesperson – often)
