This is a monumental change for triathlon, and a big one for sports tech. By bringing Hyrox into the family, World Triathlon opens a path from the gym floor to the Olympic podium, through club racing and national age-group championships, and it hands British Triathlon and every other federation a whole new sport full of athletes who already train hard and happily pay to race. Every one of those races will need timing, data, and a wrist-worn kit, and the brands that get there first will own it.
Hyrox gets the elite World, Continental and National Championships, the federations get to run their own events, and two new formats arrive, including a shorter race that most people can actually finish.

The TV coverage that should follow will need live timing and data from every station, which means sensors on the sleds, ergs and wall-ball targets, and smarter tech on the wrist. Amazfit saw this coming. It signed a three-year exclusive global deal with Hyrox in April 2026 and is pouring money into Hyrox-specific features, from automatic station transitions to station-by-station analysis from its Helio Strap Pro motion sensor.
World Triathlon announced the agreement on 28 October 2026, and it is a framework at this stage. A full Long Form Agreement will follow, setting out the governance and commercial details. It comes a year after the Wollongong Congress first recognised the format as a discipline in October 2025.
What was agreed
- Ultimate is the existing Hyrox race of eight 1 km runs and eight workout stations.
- Fast is a shorter, higher-intensity format.
- Ultra is a longer endurance format.
- World Triathlon sanctions and governs all three, and Hyrox develops them jointly and runs the elite championships in the Ultimate format.
- All 177 national federations can host Hybrid Racing events in all three formats, including national championships for age-group athletes.
- Both organisations will push for a place at multi-sport Games as a step toward the Olympic and Paralympic programmes.
Christian Toetzke, whose earlier company built the original World Triathlon Series, and Moritz Fürste, a two-time Olympic hockey champion, founded Hyrox in Hamburg in 2017. Hyrox projects more than two million participants across 105 races this season.
The Fast format is the one that matters
Most first-timers need 1.5 to 3 hours to finish the standard race. That is a half-marathon effort with a sled in the middle, and many people who try Hyrox once never race it again. A shorter, sanctioned format gives the gym member who runs parkrun a race they can finish and repeat, just as sprint and super-sprint triathlon feeds the standard distance.
Ultra points the other way, at the long-distance triathlete who already has the engine and wants a winter target. Neither new format has published precise distances or station lists yet.
Why the federations wanted this
British Triathlon ran a £239,000 deficit in its last reported year, with 120,000 people racing triathlon in Great Britain. Only 28,586 of them are members. Most race on a day licence, tick off one event, and move on, and the same annual report counted 112 cancelled events against 71 new ones.
Hybrid racing gives every federation a second product to sell to athletes who already train hard and pay entry fees. A national age-group championship needs a membership or race licence to enter, and that is where the money comes from. The Spanish Triathlon Federation didn’t wait for the deal: its Hyatlón circuit started on 10 October with four races this autumn, with Joma as kit sponsor.
The UK fit is unusually good. British Triathlon already runs a national championship series with qualifiers for the European and World age-group championships, and British age-groupers have topped every European medal table since 2023. A British Hybrid Racing championship sitting above the commercial Hyrox calendar, with Hyrox races as qualifiers, would follow a template the federation already runs well.
Where the money comes in
National federations sit inside their national Olympic committees, and that is how a sport gets government and lottery money for elite programmes. British Triathlon receives £7.55 million from UK Sport for the Los Angeles 2028 cycle, plus £4.4 million for paratriathlon. That money goes only to sports on a Games programme or confirmed for one, so hybrid racing will get none of it until the IOC settles the Brisbane 2032 programme. There is precedent for early funding: UK Sport paid for baseball and softball during the Paris cycle ahead of their LA return.
If Brisbane confirms the sport, countries that already chase Olympic triathlon medals, the UK first among them, will fund hybrid racing programmes. That brings coaching, talent identification and junior pathways to a sport that today runs as a weekend event owned by a private company.
The same athletes
Triathlon’s core age group is 40 and over, and Hyrox’s fastest-growing cohort is the same. World Triathlon president Antonio Arimany called hybrid racing “a natural evolution for our movement”, and the federation clearly wants back the athletes who drifted from the pool and the bike to the gym.
What still has to happen
- The Long Form Agreement, with the rules, anti-doping arrangements and commercial split.
- Published rules and distances for Fast and Ultra.
- An appearance at a multi-sport Games.
- IOC approval. Sitting inside an IOC-recognised federation satisfies Rule 45 of the Olympic Charter, which is a prerequisite and nothing more. LA 2028’s additional sports were confirmed in 2023, so a Brisbane decision is likely around 2028.
The name is unsettled too. World Triathlon renamed its discipline from Fitness Racing to Hyathlon in February 2026 to give it an identity separate from the Hyrox brand, yet the announcement uses Hybrid Racing throughout. Which name survives, and who owns the format when a federation stages a race without Hyrox, is the kind of detail the Long Form Agreement has to settle.
Quick answers
Is Hyrox an Olympic sport now?
No. The partnership puts hybrid racing under World Triathlon, the IOC-recognised federation, which is required for Olympic eligibility. The IOC still has to approve it, and Hyrox is targeting Brisbane 2032.
Does the standard Hyrox race change?
No. The existing race becomes the Ultimate format. Fast is a shorter, higher-intensity version and Ultra a longer one, and neither has published distances yet.
Can I race hybrid racing through my triathlon federation?
Soon. National federations can now host events in all three formats, including national age-group championships. The Spanish federation already runs a four-race Hyatlon circuit.
Will hybrid racing get lottery funding in the UK?
Not yet. UK Sport funds only sports on a Games programme or confirmed for one. British Triathlon receives 7.55 million pounds for the LA 2028 cycle for triathlon alone.
