Reasons to use a watch for cycling

  • You do not want to risk a bike computer or smartphone being damaged or stolen on your handlebars.
  • You are an occasional cyclist who does not want a dedicated cycling device.

The practical problems with a watch for cycling

  • Glancing at your wrist while riding is dangerous on the road.
  • Vibration and arm movement make a wrist-mounted display harder to read than a bar-mounted screen.

The Garmin Varia RTL515 is the best cycling radar available and pairs natively with Garmin watches from the Fenix 5 era onwards, delivering audible and on-screen alerts when a vehicle is detected behind you. Non-Garmin radars from Wahoo and Magene are available, but wrist-based integration outside Garmin is limited to third-party apps. For anyone who rides on open roads, Varia support on the wrist is a meaningful safety feature.

Making calls

An LTE Apple Watch can make and receive calls and texts independently of a phone. This is useful for solo rides: emergency SOS, live tracking, and the ability to call someone if you break down. The best alternative: a dedicated cycling computer

A cycling computer was designed for cycling, and for riders who cycle seriously it remains the better tool. A Magene or entry-level Wahoo unit costs from around $100 and outperforms any watch on bar-mounted readability, battery, and routing.
