Expert opinion

The Edge 1060 is the first Edge a rider can talk to. A microphone sits alongside the speaker the Edge 1050 already had, so ride data, route changes and hazard reports are handled by voice with both hands on the bars, and text and voice messages go out through the Garmin Messenger app. The case has come down to 142g and 107mm long, 19g lighter and 11.5mm shorter than the 1050, on the same 3.5-inch 480 x 800 touchscreen. Battery life is unchanged at 20 hours of demanding use and 60 hours in battery saver, so the endurance gap to the Edge 1040 Solar is still there. The navigation work is the other substantial change: route options compared by time, elevation and bike type, route previews that show traffic and reported hazards before the wheels turn, road closures added to the community hazard reports, and Free Flow Routing for riders who want to hold a rhythm rather than stop at every junction.

Some riders will find the voice features gimmicky. I don’t. They are a solid ease-of-use addition, and ease of use counts for more on a bar-mounted computer than it does on a watch. The routing options are the sort of thing most owners will rarely reach for, but they are good to have, and Free Flow Routing is genuinely novel. My hunch is that it sounds better in theory than it will prove on the road.

On the inside, this looks like an Edge 1050 with a microphone and a new power path. The screen, the GNSS, the storage, the sensors, the battery figures and the feature set are all the 1050’s, and it shares a firmware line with the Edge 550 and 850. The shorter, lighter case and reverse charging mean it is not simply a 1050 in new clothes, but nothing Garmin has published points to a new platform underneath.

What’s new versus the Edge 1050

Hardware

  • Built-in microphone, which the Edge 1050 does not have, alongside the existing speaker
  • Added physical buttons, which Garmin says are for gloves and wet weather; the Edge 1050 has no side buttons and relies on its touchscreen. Garmin has not said how many, or how much of the menu they reach
  • Lighter at 142g versus 161g
  • Smaller case at 107 x 58.5 x 16.3mm versus 118.5 x 60.2 x 16.3mm, on the same screen size
  • Reverse charging, so the unit can top up a phone or tail light over USB-C off the bike
  • Garmin lists security updates until at least 20 October 2028

Software

  • Hands-free voice control, started with “Okay, Garmin”, for ride statistics, routing, points of interest and hazard reporting
  • Voice and text messaging through the Garmin Messenger app, with incoming messages read aloud
  • Route Options, which compares ways to a destination by ride time, elevation and bike type
  • Route Previews, which give distance, estimated ride time, traffic and reported hazards before the ride starts
  • Free Flow Routing, which finds training routes with the fewest stops, junctions and slow sections
  • Road closure alerts, added to the existing community reports of potholes, obstructions and aggressive animals
  • GroupRide detection, which offers to join an active group ride the unit finds nearby
  • Interactive workout screen, with upcoming steps and zoom on the full session
  • Customisable home screen, choosing which apps and widgets sit at the front while riding
  • Automatic TrainingPeaks workout sync to the device
  • High-zoom road visibility, which keeps small and hidden roads on the map at close zoom levels
  • Pin drop navigation, which turns a pin sent from Apple Maps into bike-specific navigation
  • Ride readiness menu, a pre-ride checklist of paired sensors and their battery status in each ride profile

Battery life is identical to the Edge 1050. The Edge 1040 Solar remains Garmin’s longest-lasting bike computer, at up to 45 hours of demanding use and 100 hours in battery saver mode, and nothing in the current bright-screen generation approaches it.

Ride profiles

Ride-specific routing covers road, gravel and mountain, and the Enduro, eEnduro and Downhill profiles bring 5Hz position recording, MTB Dynamics, and Grit and Flow metrics to descents, with automatic switching between climbs and descents. eBike profiles are available for compatible Bosch and Shimano systems, and indoor rides are covered through smart trainer control.
