Expert opinion
The Fitbit Versa 4 functions better as a lightweight daily fitness tracker in a smartwatch frame than as a full-featured smartwatch. It excels with its week-long battery life, tactile side button, comfortable design, and reliable core health tracking like sleep, continuous heart rate, and overnight SpO2 and skin temperature monitoring.
Google significantly stripped back its predecessor’s smart functionality by removing third-party app support and all offline music storage or streaming controls, while its built-in GPS and heart rate responsiveness during high-intensity intervals lag behind serious athletic wearables. It also omits advanced health sensors like the ECG found on the Sense 2, and locks deeper trend analytics behind a paid Fitbit Premium subscription. It suits casual users who prioritise long battery life and basic exercise logging over advanced training metrics or smart app ecosystems, but dedicated runners or tech-focused buyers will find better value in options from Garmin, Apple or Samsung.

What’s new versus Versa 3
Hardware
- A physical side button replaces the capacitive touch panel on the Versa 3’s edge. It sits slightly higher on the case for easier access and responds more reliably with wet or sweaty hands.
- The case is 1.2mm thinner than the Versa 3, though 2g heavier. The AMOLED display and overall shape are otherwise unchanged.
Software
- Workout modes double from the Versa 3’s 20 to more than 40 on the Versa 4, adding weightlifting and dance-based cardio profiles.
- Google Wallet and Google Maps are built in, both absent from the Versa 3.
- Amazon Alexa replaces the Versa 3’s Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa dual-assistant support; the Versa 4 carries Alexa only.
- Third-party app support is removed entirely. The Versa 3’s Fitbit OS app gallery, including Strava, is not available on the Versa 4.
- Offline music storage and third-party streaming controls (Deezer, Pandora) present on the Versa 3 are removed. The Versa 4 has no on-device music storage.

Battery type is lithium-polymer. Google states a full day’s charge takes around 12 minutes, useful for topping up between sessions rather than a full recharge. Battery life and charge cycles vary with use, settings and other factors.
Features
The Versa 4 pairs with the Google Health app, which replaced the Fitbit app, and requires a Google account.
- Daily Readiness Score checks workout readiness from recovery, sleep and activity data.
- 40+ exercise modes cover running, cycling, weights, yoga and more, with live stats on the wrist.
- Sleep Score rates the previous night’s sleep.
- Stress score gives a daily reading based on heart rate, activity and sleep patterns.
- Irregular Heart Rhythm Notifications flag signs associated with AFib, shareable with a doctor.
- Move reminders prompt 250 steps every hour.
- Google Wallet enables contactless payments from the wrist.
- Amazon Alexa handles voice queries, alarms and weather checks through the built-in speaker and microphone.
- Three months of Google Health Premium are included at launch, unlocking AI-based coaching built with Gemini. It renews at £7.99 a month after the trial.
Sensors and health features
The SpO2 and skin temperature sensors are not available in all countries and are not intended for medical diagnosis; Google positions them as wellbeing tools rather than clinical measurements. Irregular Heart Rhythm Notifications are not intended for users under 22 or those with known arrhythmias, and heart rhythm data is recorded only when the wearer is still or sleeping.
The Versa 4 has no ECG app, unlike the Fitbit Sense 2. Advanced trend analytics for sleep, stress and SpO2 require a Google Health Premium subscription.
