Q: Amazfit Active Max or Garmin Forerunner 170?

Forerunner 170 costs $299.99 and brings Garmin’s training software, including Training Readiness. Active Max costs $169 and has the larger screen.

Question 1

Is the Amazfit Active Max worth $70 more than the Active 2?

Accepted Answer

Only if you want the larger 1.5-inch screen. The hardware is slightly better and the software is very similar, and Active Max is often discounted.

Question 2

Can the Amazfit Active Max replace a Garmin or Coros for structured training?

Accepted Answer

Yes, for many athletes. It follows structured workouts and training plans, and since the October 2026 update it connects to FTMS smart trainers and spin bikes to show power, cadence, speed and distance. Amazfit does not say it can control a trainer’s resistance, and it cannot follow plans from platforms such as Final Surge.

Question 3

How accurate are the Amazfit Active Max heart rate and GPS?

Accepted Answer

The GPS scored 81% on my 10-mile test route, accurate enough for most uses but behind high-end Coros and Garmin models. Wrist heart rate was not precise enough for me, though results vary by person.

Question 4

Do the Amazfit Active Max offline maps work well?

Accepted Answer

Yes, once the map is downloaded. Panning and scrolling are smoother than on Garmin.

Question 5

What bugs should I expect on the Amazfit Active Max?

Accepted Answer

Expect missing options rather than failures. Every workout recorded in full in my testing, and the worst fault was Zepp Pay, which I could not get working in the UK.

Question 6

How long does the Amazfit Active Max battery last?

Accepted Answer

Amazfit claims up to 25 days of typical use and 64 hours of GPS. In my testing, GPS lasted closer to 50 hours, and I easily got more than a week between charges with regular workouts.

Question 7

How much does the Amazfit Active Max weigh?

Accepted Answer

Amazfit lists 39.5g without the strap.

Question 8

Amazfit Active Max or Coros Pace 4?

Accepted Answer

Active Max costs $80 less and adds a larger 1.5-inch display, NFC payments and calls through a paired phone. Coros Pace 4 has more accurate GPS and better support for structured training plans bought online.

Question 9

Amazfit Active Max or Garmin Forerunner 170?

Accepted Answer

Forerunner 170 costs $299.99 and brings Garmin’s training software, including Training Readiness. Active Max costs $169 and has the larger screen.
