100m in 9.32 secs: World Record Smashed…by a robot
The maker of the Honor Watch 6 smartwatch has built a robot called “Lightning,” which lived up to its name, completing a 100m run in 9.32 seconds – a quarter of a second faster than Usain Bolt’s 9.58-second world record. The robot hit a peak speed of 14.5 metres per second during testing for Beijing’s World Humanoid Robot Games.
Lightning has form…
Lightning has a track record beyond sprinting: it won the 21km Beijing half marathon in April in 50 minutes and 26 seconds, considerably faster than the elite human world-record pace. However, for the 100m event, Lightning appears to have stumbled into the ‘Enhanced Games’ category as its engineers lengthened the legs from 95cm to 1.05 metres between the two events.
During the half marathon, Lightning wore an Honor Watch 6 Plus, a marketing tie-in showcasing the smartwatch’s running credentials, presumably providing valuable split times and pacing advice 😉
This info also means I should correct my earlier article on the fastest watch over a mile, which was held by the Amazfit Cheetah 2 Pro. But I won’t!
