What is the fastest watch over a mile?
Josh Kerr ran 3:42.66 for the mile at the Novuna London Athletics Meet on 18 July 2026, taking an impressive 0.47 seconds off Hicham El Guerrouj’s 1999 mark and becoming the first man under 3:43. The result is pending ratification by World Athletics.
The watch on his wrist was a custom Amazfit Cheetah 2 Pro, built for the occasion with diamonds and a 10K gold-dipped bezel. Kerr is a sponsored Amazfit athlete.

The race, lap by lap
Brannon Kidder and Žan Rudolf took the pacing duties. Kidder hit 400m in 54.75, with Kerr a few strides behind in 55.3, that pace was held pretty consistently.
- 400m: 55.3
- 800m: 1:51.1 (55.8)
- 1200m: 2:46.4 (55.3)
- 1500m: 3:27.62, a personal best
- 1609m: 3:42.66
Kerr passed 1200m inside world record tempo and moved clear of Yared Nuguse on the back straight of the final lap. He covered the closing 409m in 56.27 seconds, with the last 109m in 16.27. Nuguse finished second in 3:45.69, with Jake Hayward third in 3:46.73.
The 1500m split of 3:27.62 is the number that should hold attention. That is a time that would have won serious global medals for most of the last two decades, but Kerr did that on the way to a longer distance finish.
What the Cheetah 2 Pro recorded
Kerr and his coach Danny Mackey reviewed the file in the Zepp App after the race, and Amazfit released the following figures.
- Average heart rate 178 bpm, maximum 188 bpm
- Average cadence 194 spm, rising to 199 over the final 16 seconds
- Maximum stride length 2.2m
Accurate, continuous heart rate came from a custom Project 222 Helio Armband rather than the watch’s wrist sensor. Amazfit deserves credit for implying that the on-watch heart rate would have been less accurate.
A maximum of 188 bpm with an average of 178 across 222 seconds supports the even pacing data elsewhere.
Does sponsorship tell you anything about the watch?
It tells you Amazfit paid for the wrist. Elite track athletes wear the brand that funds them, and the same has been true of Garmin, Coros, Polar and Suunto for years. Kerr’s mile does not establish that the Cheetah 2 Pro measures pace, distance or heart rate better than a competitor, merely that Pros are prepared to wear them or even use them.
What the arrangement does clearly establish is that Amazfit has bought into a highly impressive mile world record, and the photo above and others like it will already have justified Kerr’s sponsorship. Zepp Health has spent two years pushing the Amazfit Cheetah 2 Ultra and the wider Cheetah line at serious runners rather than at the budget segment that built the company. no doubt, it hopes the association will hold well in our minds.
Coach Mackey’s account of the training use is the more useful part of the release. He describes the wearable data as what gave the coaching staff confidence Kerr was ready, drawn from sleep, heart rate variability, and resting heart rate trends across the block rather than from any single session. Kerr apparently targets eight hours of sleep a night plus around ninety minutes napping during the day.
Kerr closed his final 409m in 56.27 seconds; sadly, no watch on the market does that for you.
Quick answers
What watch did Josh Kerr wear for the mile world record?
A custom Amazfit Cheetah 2 Pro with diamonds and a 10K gold-dipped bezel, paired with a Project 222 Helio Armband for continuous heart rate. Kerr is a contracted Amazfit athlete.
What is the fastest mile ever run?
3:42.66, set by Josh Kerr at the Novuna London Athletics Meet on 18 July 2026. It is pending ratification by World Athletics and beats Hicham El Guerrouj’s 3:43.13 from Rome in 1999.
What were Josh Kerr's splits for the 3:42.66 mile?
55.3 at 400m, 1:51.1 at 800m, 2:46.4 at 1200m and 3:27.62 at 1500m, with the final 409m covered in 56.27 seconds and the last 109m in 16.27.
What was Josh Kerr's heart rate during the mile?
Amazfit reported an average of 178 bpm and a maximum of 188 bpm, captured by the Helio Armband on the upper arm rather than the watch’s wrist sensor.
What was Josh Kerr's cadence and stride length?
Average cadence of 194 steps per minute, rising to 199 in the final 16 seconds, with a reported maximum stride length of 2.2m. The stride figure does not reconcile with the average speed, which points to the watch under-reading distance on the bends.
Can a GPS watch measure a mile accurately on a running track?
Not reliably. Satellite positioning cuts the arc on 400m bends and under-reads distance, and stadium structures worsen multipath error. Track results come from official photo-finish timing.
What does Josh Kerr race next?
The revived Commonwealth Mile at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games and the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest.
