What Series 12 adds that no software update can deliver
watchOS 27 is a free upgrade and brings Siri AI, the new Steps complication, improved distance algorithms, perimenopause support in Cycle Tracking, and Workout Buddy without iPhone to every supported Apple Watch – including Series 9, 10 and 11. Those are not reasons to upgrade. These new hardware features on Series 12 are:

Series owners: the cut-off point
No Series 9 or newer owner needs to upgrade to Series 12. Series 9, 10, 11 and SE 3 owners will receive all the watchOS 27 software features — Siri AI, Steps, improved algorithms, perimenopause support, Workout Buddy — without buying new hardware.
Series 6, 7, 8 and SE 2 do not support watchOS 27. For those owners, the question isn’t whether to upgrade, but which model to choose and when.

- Series 11 is one year old with a near-new battery and full watchOS 27 support. The upgrade argument is the Health Sensing System alone.

The resale and software support timing question
