Expert opinion
Series 12 replaces the periodic optical heart rate sampling of Series 11 with a new Health Sensing System that measures continuously every five seconds throughout the day. Apple claims this is the most accurate heart rate sensing in any wearable, based on a study of over 1,000 participants. HRV is now measured up to 24 times more frequently than Series 11 and split into two variants: Recovery HRV for daily stress and readiness signals, and overall HRV for longer-term cardiovascular insight. The Readiness app integrates these signals with training load, sleep score and vitals into a 0–10 daily score with a plain-English recommendation. For endurance athletes who currently use third-party recovery apps such as Correlate or Cinder, Readiness replaces the core function of those apps natively. The S11 chip brings Apple Intelligence and Audio Intelligence. Outdoor workout battery rises to 10 hours from 8, and Low Power Mode rises to 38 hours. A 15-minute charge delivers 12 hours of use, up from 8 hours on Series 11. Aluminium models gain Ceramic Shield 2, rated 60% tougher than the Ion-X glass on Series 11. The ceramic case option returns for the first time since Series 5, in pearl white and night blue.
