Sydney Marathon 2026: course, elevation, entry and race-day logistics

On Sunday 30 August 2026 the Harbour Bridge closes to traffic and the TCS Sydney Marathon presented by ASICS runs from North Sydney to the Opera House Forecourt. The 2025 edition produced 32,964 finishers. Organisers have referred to 35,000 marathon runners for 2026, and the New South Wales venue partners put the figure nearer 41,000, inside a two-day festival of about 51,000 participants across all distances.

Status, and what the star actually counts for

Sydney was elevated to the Abbott World Marathon Majors on 4 November 2024 and ran its first race as a Major on 31 August 2025. It is the seventh Major and the newest one racing, though no longer the most recent addition. The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon was confirmed as the eighth in June 2026 and debuts on 23 May 2027.

Sydney does not count towards the Six Star medal. That award remains fixed to the six original races, Berlin, Boston, Chicago, London, New York and Tokyo, and runners who have completed those six keep their Six Star status unchanged. Entry, fees and the routes still open

The course, and why it is not a personal best

The marathon starts on Miller Street at St Leonards Park in North Sydney, crosses the Harbour Bridge early, then runs through The Rocks and the CBD before an out-and-back along Anzac Parade, a loop of Centennial Park, and a return past Mrs Macquarie’s Chair to the Opera House Forecourt.

Organisers publish a full GPX file with kilometre markers, worth loading onto a watch weeks before travel rather than fighting airport wifi at the last minute. Runners arriving from further afield, and plenty come from East Africa each year, tend to sort their phone apps before boarding too. Near the finish at Circular Quay and The Rocks, the Sydney Harbour Marriott, Park Hyatt Sydney and Shangri-La Sydney sit close to the Opera House, with YHA Sydney Harbour offering the same view at hostel rates. The central CBD around Wynyard or Town Hall works as a compromise, walkable to the finish and a short metro ride to the start.

North Sydney fills months out. Book it early if you are running.

An extra day in the city

Most of the 2025 field stayed on either side of the race. Darling Harbour is close enough to the finish for a short limp, The Rocks keeps its convict-era lanes and pubs, and the Circular Quay ferries reach Manly in around thirty minutes on the standard service.
