Expert opinion

MARQ Gen 3 is the Fenix 9 Pro inReach in a 47mm Grade 5 titanium case with a ceramic bezel, and every edition works without a phone through Garmin’s inReach service: voice calls to other Garmin Messenger users over LTE, and messages, check-ins, weather and interactive SOS over LTE or satellite. It carries the Fenix 9 software, including Garmin Epic, stamina tracking and rolling grade-adjusted pace, worldwide maps on 128GB of storage, a flashlight, a speaker and microphone, the ECG app and a 40m dive computer. Garmin rates it for 18 days as a smartwatch and 32 hours of activity recording in the normal mode. The six editions share that core and differ in strap, bezel and four sets of edition-only tools for flying, tactical use, diving and golf. The Athlete costs $2,500, $600 more than the titanium Gen 2 Athlete on Garmin.com, and about $1,200 more than a Fenix 9 Pro inReach. Every edition adds worldwide preloaded maps, on-watch address search, MARQ-only watch faces and, once Garmin releases it, ClimbPro without a loaded course. DC Rainmaker also reports predictive text on the keyboard and a lume mode. Four editions also add flight, tactical, dive and golf tools the Fenix lacks.

At launch, for pre-orders, Garmin sells MARQ only directly. Each edition below links to its Garmin.com page.
