Expert opinion

The Galaxy Watch 9 is a modest evolution. Samsung has directed the generation at internal improvements rather than design: the more efficient Snapdragon Wear Elite processor, a larger battery on both sizes, and a wider set of health features that now includes Vitals, Daily Cardio Load, Heart Health Score and Fitness Index. Samsung provides these without a subscription. That is the watch’s answer to WHOOP and the other recovery-focused wearables, which put comparable analysis behind a monthly fee.

That strategy also defines the weakness. The design and sensor package are close to the Galaxy Watch 8, and the price has risen by roughly 10 per cent, so the Watch 9 is hard to recommend over its predecessor. For a new buyer, or anyone moving up from an older Galaxy Watch, it is among the more complete Wear OS options, and the subscription-free health platform is the reason.

  • 445mAh battery on the 44mm, up from 435mAh

  • Storage remains 32GB, memory remains 2GB, display remains up to 3,000 nits, positioning remains L1 and L5 dual-frequency GPS
  • Durability remains 5 ATM with IP68 and MIL-STD-810H

Battery life

Samsung quotes up to 30 hours with the always-on display enabled on both sizes, the same figure as the Galaxy Watch 8. The 40mm cell grows by 20 per cent to 390mAh and the 44mm by 10mAh to 445mAh, so the gain appears as headroom rather than a longer quoted runtime. Both sizes support fast charging over a WPC wireless charger.

Capacity, 40mm 390mAh typical
Capacity, 44mm 445mAh typical
Normal use, always-on display enabled Up to 30 hours
Charging WPC wireless, fast charging supported

Features

Feature availability depends on the Samsung Health app version and on pairing with an Android phone. Samsung lists Android 13 or above and Samsung Health v7.0 or above for Vitals, Fitness Index, Daily Cardio Load and Heart Health Score.

Training

  • Running Coach with a three to five week guided program
  • Daily Cardio Load, estimating strain and recovery need from recent activity
  • Fitness Index, drawing on VO2 Max, bioelectrical impedance, heart rate, steps and activity
  • Personalised heart rate zones
  • Strava with automatic upload, and iFIT trainer-led sessions
  • Fall detection and Emergency SOS

Health and recovery

  • Vitals, tracking heart rate, heart rate variability, respiratory rate, skin temperature and blood oxygen overnight, after seven nights of data. Samsung’s multi-metric Vitals alert compares this feature against Apple’s equivalent
  • Energy Score, a daily readiness rating from recent activity, sleep and overnight heart signals
  • Sleep tracking with stages, sleep score and Sleep Coaching over a three to four week program
  • Sleep apnea risk detection, which Samsung describes as FDA-approved and which is limited to selected countries and to users aged 22 and over
  • Blood pressure, requiring calibration against a cuff every four weeks, with availability limited by country
  • ECG through the Samsung Health Monitor app
  • Heart Health Score, drawing on sleep time, BMI, vascular load and vigorous activity
  • Antioxidant index, measured through the BioActive sensor
  • Body composition through bioelectrical impedance analysis

Smartwatch and platform

  • Wear OS 7 with One UI 9 Watch and the Google Play Store
  • Google Gemini with Raise to Talk, which is off by default and increases battery consumption when enabled
  • NFC payments
  • Portrait watch face, generated from a chosen photo
